It was a real life medical experiment without anaesthetic by the US. They could have quite easily have dropped the bombs 40 miles from Tokyo in a non-populated area and warned that the city would be next on the list if they didn't surrender. The population of Hiroshima at the time was mostly kids, women and old people as the men were away soldiering. Something the US would also have obviously known. A heinous act.

My position is this. To see human suffering on that scale is terrible but it has to be put in contest.
With some success. I suspect the Russians wouldn't really have balked at the idea of losing a million men in the invasion of Japan either. Compared to the Eastern front, those were fairly light casualties compared to Stalingrad, Moscow and Leningrad
The original post smacks of revisionist history.

the devastating effect of the 2 low yield(comparitively) bombs in 1945 has probably prevented the use since then of far more destructive weapons.

Whatever views we hold on this we hold them in the relative comfort of hindsight with no grasp on the context of the day. A nuclear bomb was always going to be used in anger, whether by the US (with UK complicity) or by the Germans who were in a clear race against the US to develop the technology, or by the Russians if neither of the others had got around to it. Sadly two bombs were dropped in anger but it's fair to say that the aftermath of them is what lead to the non-proliferation treaties and prevented any further bombs being used in anger.
Cynic or realist? It's a fine line! |

There were people like the lefties on this thread who didn't want to fight and complained about everything during WW2. They didn't like Churchill of course. Some things never change. Lucky they weren't in charge.

This contemporary poster sums up the US attitude to Japan during the WW2. The caption says A war worker writes her navy boy friend a thank you note for the Jap skull he sent her. Attachment: womanandskull.jpg (54.16Kb)

The original post smacks of revisionist history. LOL. 'late' ! The USSR declared war on Japan on 8 August 1945 - two days after the first A-bombing. Do you think they may have thought they were on to a sure thing? Do you think Stalin was prepared to throw millions of men into the struggle Jamie?
