Given that it's 1400 light years away or in laymans terms 8,229,899,734,000,000 miles, we'll never really know exactly what it is they think they've found.
Cynic or realist? It's a fine line! |

Well with the vastness of space and there being billions upon billions of stars with no doubt billions of planets there is bound to be earth like planets. If it can happen in our solar system why not another one. No doubt there is life out there, and intelligent life at that. I have been reading an excellent book by Neil Degrasse Tyson [Link] He explains this quite well, basically the chance of intelligent life forming in the universe is about 1% yet that 1% still means billions of intelligent life out there. I love it when people quote figures about the likelihood of life. How can any one possibly know ? The Drake equation or any other method requires so much guess work that it has no real value. We know there is life out there an some will be intelligent. That is unless you prefer the alternative theory that life began only once in the entire Universe. Not very likely really.

Neil De-grasse Tyson I'm sure is a little more qualified to make this claim than any of us, without quoting the whole chapter I suggest you have a read it's a thouroughly enjoyable book. in its rawest form there are hundreds of billions of planets like ours sitting in their respective habitable zones, every object in space would of encountered it's own bombardment shortly after it's formation that's your seeding of the elements done (courtesy of exploding stars I might add) , once the planet has sufficiently cooled it takes no time at all to create an organic soup as shown in Carl Sagans Cosmos, from there we simply need to have patience for early simple cells to form such as archaea (see our ocean) Going back to your post you try to discredit the claim yet agree there is life out there.
