I think Hoof remembers the wars first hand.

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses.

No idea what I would have done in this bloke's position.

Not volunteer for the SS?

Far from that easy. Complicated situation - do I get conscripted or enlist, once in do I want to go to the eastern front or take a 'cushy desk job'. I just don't know, neither do you, neither do any of us.

Sexiest. Uniform. Ever.

You and I would have been killing to get to the front of the recruitment office queue, Jamie.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

I find it odd that many people are prepared to forgive and forget the part this guy played in exterminating hundreds of thousands of innocent human beings yet these same people have such a bitter hatred of Maggie Thatcher, the Bankers and old people who they believe are bleeding the country dry with their pensions.

Probably because they have first hand experience of Conservative policy of the 80s, which Thatcher personally was responsible for. Where as this bloke was an administrator for a few years at the death camps, until he could transfer out to a Waffen SS battalion.

That explains it all........

That is to say its less abstracted - WWII was something that happened to other people, so consequently their experience is second or third hand, which distances you from the events. Its less personal.

What did Thatcher do to you then Jamie? Gassed your parents?

Except its do I join the army or get conscripted, or do I volunteer for the Waffen-SS National Socialist Political Militia.

I wonder what people thought they might be getting into when they were handing out the Deaths Head badges. I know I have the benefit of hindsight, but that's the kind of a warning sign? Does anyone really see a skull and crossbones and think, this will end well.

I'm pretty confident I wouldn't have joined the SS, because I would have failed the racial purity test (being of Romany decent). Its important to remember that the Deaths Heads weren't solely limited to concentration and death camps, but also battlefield units (notoriously involved in purges on the Eastern Front).

The key thing about the SS is that they didn't conscript (until 1943), it was entirely voluntary, and weren't exactly in cushy jobs either (SS Units served in most offensives).

Of join the Navy or the Lufftwaffe - Generally fairly safe jobs provided you're not an air crewman. No one joins Ultra-Nationalist Right Wing Racist Militias thinking, this'll be cushy.

A nice cushy job in the Auschwitz Gift Shop would have done me or mucking out the Penguins in the Treblinka Zoo

Stole my milk.... but then I did also grudgingly respect her. Didn't like her policies, or the results of the impact on the UK, but she was at least a memorable and determined politicial leader with convictions. There hasn't been too many of those in the left for a long time.

Oddly one of my favorite politicians has always been Heseltine.

For the most part, getting a cushy job in the SS, meant being wounded. The SS tended to reward those injured or rendered no longer suitable for the battle field, with the administration jobs.

Of course having certain skills when you join any military force, that are in demand, can be beneficial.

Must be nice, knowing exactly what you'd do in any given situation, with propaganda flying around in all directions, a military role of some sort inevitable, and the world in turmoil.

Sadly, I'm not that brilliant myself.

One of the best uniforms of all time, is definitely the SS Officer, even the camo pattern SS battle dress was pretty snazzy.

I'd need false documents though.
