Car! You dinosaur! Don't you know that everyone should be riding bikes or driving things made of recyclable cardboard powered by wind?

Honda CR-v-loads of leg room front and back, massive boot, and reliable.
by a mile Hondas are a bit expensive but if you buy an old one you can still rely on it so worth it. - only providing its been looked after and serviced properly in the first place

Hi all. Boring topic, but I need a new car as mine is dying. Any good suggestions out there for a family of 4? My wife drives it once or twice a week for shortish (like 5 miles) journeys and we do drive on holiday with it. It should have plenty of boot space, as I'm sick of using roofboxes on holiday. Wife doesn't want an estate, though. Fuel efficiency not a huge deal, as our total annual mileage is quite low. budget around 7-8K Thanks in advance!

For reliability go for a Honda. We've had a 2nd hand Jazz for 5 or 6 years now and it's been brilliant. Also used it to tow a,small trailer. The way the rear seats fold down gives a totally flat large rear area which is great for our 2 greyhounds.

Ford Smax Zetec unbelivabley good car, had one when my we ones were babies, cheap to run, not sluggish, stakes of room, and loads of goodies as standard like heated windscreens. Short of going full retard and getting a 4X4 (if you live in London) easily the best family car out there.

It makes such a difference when you can trust your car. In my experience Renaults are the pits, totally rubbish build quality. I have a Fiat, which is made of cheese and spaghetti. Previously had a VW Touran which - to my amazement - was also pretty bad for faults. Hondas are a bit expensive but if you buy an old one you can still rely on it so worth it. Have you tried a Yeti if you like the SUV style? CRV is a pretty good reliable family car, lacks torque though.

6 in my family so we have had a ford galaxy for the last few years. Have just ordered a BMW 2 series gran tourer though which should be arriving in early September. It's BMWs attempt to crack the 7 seater family car market to rival the Galaxy, scenic etc. Never had a BMW so will be interested to see what it's like. Expensive but hopefully it will last us a fair while!!
If the former, fill up from shell every three tanks, use the additives and a decent long run often. I know it's standard for diesels but my BMW was doing over 40 motorway miles a day and I had serious problems with the DPF and other exhaust components including sensors. I loved the car, seriously loved the car but I had to get rid in the end as it was just a nightmare going into limp mode on a regular basis. Cheers for the advice DeSouza. It is going to be a diesel. To be honest we only do about 20-30 miles a day... Do I need to give it a good ragging every day to stop the above??... Also why diesel from the Shell garage?? Only asking as my knowledge of cars etc ain't great!!
Don't waste your time with jealousy. Sometimes your ahead, sometimes your behind, the race is long. But in the end it's only with yourself!! |
