Personality politics in full flow. Let's vote for someone based on how sexy or otherwise they look eating a bacon sandwich. Maybe we should have a lovely legs contest instead of voting on policy.
This was once a quality forum.... |

What about his stupid policies like capping fuel prices when they were really high? Even though he was the energy secretary who brought in all the green policies? What about the Mansion tax? Total Crap He also wanted to cap rents which would never work He was clueless and out of touch
I really hope labour have some balls and lurch leftwards. Mark my words the tories haven't even started cutting yet, by the time the next election comes around...
As do the Tories. Sure fire way to ensure a permanent Tory hold over the centre ground and, therefore, government.
When the time comes, I want die just like my Dad - at peace and asleep. |

More often parties get voted out rather than in, so when things mess up which inevitably happens whoever is in power there will be a shift. It's all point scoring, from all parties. I mean, The tories wanted further bank deregulation and actually pledged to match Labours spending, but when the s*** hit the fan with the global crash, it's a winning tactic to now go on the attack as if it magically wouldn't have happened under their watch. Boris will be leader. You can't wait for that can you?
Well that's true, but only if you consider the English to be only those in the south east, and outside of London. One of the problems that Labour have is that for large swathes of the country they have been too right wing. Most of the north, the midlands, Wales and especially Scotland are actually in favour of socially responsible politics, as is a lot of London. In the rush to claim the centre ground, against the party's instincts, they have lost a large number of their potential supporters. They became "Tory-lite" losing the election against a quite un-popular coalition government (whose junior partners were totally wiped out) the only logical conclusion is that they need to show some clear water between themselves and their opponents. Tory-lite may have been good enough to secure Blair three victories in a row, but we are now in a different place, and I sense the electorate want a real alternative, not a slightly less Tory version.

Dave & Co. seem to be the most unpopular government since the Thatcher days. Yet Labour failed to take advantage of that. Shows how poor their Leadership choices are / were.
Miliband distanced himself from "New Labour" and took the party to the 'Left' but you cannot win elections in the UK from the 'Left'. Miliband didn't come across as a credible leader and at the end of the day the voters never trusted Labour to deliver especially on the economy.
Being that prior to the global banking crisis the Conservatives had pledged to match Labours spending, and wanted further deregulation of the banks, how do you draw the conclusion that they would've better managed the economy?

What typically happens is a party loses an election, then moves away from the centre toward their core vote. History shows that doesn't work. What Labour needs is a left of centre business friendly approach. Sadly the unions will not want to approve a Labour leader with that plan = another term out of government.
