I drove from LA to Vegas via the Canyon. Both Vegas and the Canyon were worth a visit but boy was the drive long and boring.

Best advise is to take running shoes and exercise as much as possible. The American portions are huge and in three weeks you could easily add two inches to your waist line.

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses.

If you do drive from LA to Vegas or vice versa, take the longer route via the South Rim of the Canyon. The South Rim is much more scenic than the north side and some nice scenic places to detour to/stopoff at on the way between Vegas and the South Rim.

And if you get the chance,go to Monument Valley,as an earlier poster said.Where some of the classic John Wayne westerns were filmed.

Thanks for all the comments, really helpful.

Due to slight time constraints we've decided to concentrate on the West Coast, and currently looking to do:

San Fran (including day trip to Yosemite), Pacific highway drive to Los Angeles, and then fly to Vegas (including Grand Canyon).

How would you split the trip with 17 nights to play with? (obviously taking into account we are flying from London / jet jag etc).

travel all depends on what you care about. the west coast of the us of a has whatever you want. lots of vegas talk in this thread: if i'm recommending what to see to a foreigner, vegas is the last thing i'd mention unless you enjoy any of the following: canned shows, gambling, desert. that's not my thing so i'm biased against it.

here's what i can tell you: the gran canyon should not be missed. if you're an outdoorsy couple, then i wouldn't start in vegas. i'd start in phoenix, due camelback mountain, hit tempe (college area of phoenix). if you golf, camelback's entrance is technically scottsdale i think (or close enough). arizona has the painted desert to the east, there's a giant crater on the way to visit (forget the name but it's worth a stop for a couple of hours).

the real trick is to stop in sedona. again, if you're into the outdoors and/or arts. look it up if you don't know. then you can go north to flagstaff (elevation of 5,000 feet+). you can hike the mountain and then the grand canyon is another hour or so north of that. you can spend 10 minutes or 2 weeks at the canyon. you can literally stand there and look at it all day. i can't say that about anything else on the planet. this will sound silly but it's true - you just can't believe what you're looking at.

again, if you want the glitz and glammer trip, then vegas and LA are the way to go. someone said monterry i think - pretty sweet. san fran is defintiely unique, maybe even on the planet.

haven't been to seattle but lots of friends and work colleagues there. cool people. they have good outdoorsy stuff as well from what they tell me. but nothing beats arizona in my book. sedona: seriously - if you get to the grand canyon, go to sedonsa as well.

On the drive on PCH from SF to LA,spend the night near Big Sur.Have a drink/coffee outside,at a restaurant/bar called Napenthe (if its still there),great view of the ocean.

Morro Bay is good too.

Agreed with that, Seattle is awesome as well. I drove from there to Sasquatch music festival 4 years ago and the scenery around that area is stunning.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold...

Seems a bit of a waste to drive from LA to Vegas Pete, it's a two hour drive.
