Well, I'd suggest there are three possible scenarios to play out:

a) We start picking up a load of W's and points, shooting up the table as a result of managerial masterclasses.

b) We continue seeing the performances we are accustomed to without Wilf and sometimes with him of late and end up getting relegated off the back of one of the worst runs we've ever witnessed (performance and results wise)

c) We limp over the line, or maybe even with some comfort survive the drop this season.

If hypothetical situations a) or b) play out there will be a hella lot of 'I told you so-s'. If it is to be c) then yes I think you're right. If RH's contract is extended it'll probably be more than another 200 pages, if it isn't there will still probably be some debate driven by whoever takes over and the following seasons performances and results.

It really is hard to read at this point. One things for sure , and that is only performance from players, can keep us in this league, let alone in some style.
As far as how any new manager gets on. Just as is the case with Hodgson, there will always be a group that never wanted the man in the first place , and never will unless he can start conjuring up 60 pts a season, and in some style , start to slip though , and it will be , told you so. And that regardless of if he plays open attractive ,or unattractive safety first football and the team survives. It’s all part of football , How long, will klopp, get, or Jose, or even Arteta, if they don’t get a turn a round.? And in the case of Jose, will the questions go away as to style? I doubt it.

I am actually insulted by being compared to Charlton fans and will now deal with a couple of Roy's points.
He states it's an achievement in itself to stay up. Eight years in it shouldn't be the objective. Targets go up incrementally every year in every business. As many have stated, an objective of staying up is just treading water. There has been no discernable year on year improvement at the club. Even our ambitions have not evolved. That's called stagnation in anyone's book.
The budget is an interesting point. We've just let Meyer go on a free. Firstly, why not a fee, he was certainly worth something? Even then, if we were never going to play him (Roy) why wait years? Why not get rid a year ago and save the wages.
Secondly, it is the wages that are a problem combined with poor management (not just Roy). However, Roy could have asked to be rid of some of the deadwood a while ago. He was never going to play certain players and others are permanently injured. We have spent more on wasted wages than we have on transfers. It's why we never have any money. Wickham for example. Play or go, not renew contract. Roy could have simply asked seasons ago that certain players were sold, or released. One has to suspect a manager would be listened to. Roy's as culpable for this as anyone else.
Also Roy, and all your mates and supporters, why pick Benteke all of the time? Nobody else would, or would they? I doubt it. That's on you Roy.
The style of play, no shots, no entries to the box, the fitness training, that's on you Roy. The injuries are on you Roy, your idea of rotation is play the crap players in the two Cup games we get in a season. You must have taken a leaf out of early eighties Villa - who used 12 players to win the league. The news Roy, however, is it's 2021. Squads rotate or die: in fact they even use their own youth sometimes. Despite various sycophants saying they're crap our youngsters are plenty better than many of our first team. But I guess they're not favourites.
When someone is sh1t Roy, you drop them. You don't just play the same over and over again. Competition for places. Does not exist in our club, Roy. Who is that on? - oh yes the manager.
When we stay up take the accolades that you seem to need and avoid the criticism you seem unable to take.
Don't ever f***ing equate us to Charlton again, you're out of order in my book. Stop making your f***ing excuses and do something. You're the f***ing boss, own the problems. Solve the problems. Instead you deflect, this fault, that fault.
And please God go at the end of this season or earlier. I'll always support Palace but I'm going to need the Samaritans if your contract is renewed. So will plenty of others.

A most excellent post.

You are quoting my words out of their context. I HAVEN'T Said that there's no-one out there who couldn't do better than Hodgson per se. I said there's unlikely to be another manager out there who could get better results OVER THE NEXT FEW GAMES (i.e. whilst our injury crisis continues) and obviously, any manager out there would have to be available to come into the club at short notice. You seem to have totally ignored the rest of my post which makes it quite clear that I'm not someone who's backing Hodgson to the hilt.

I'm sure there are managers out there who could do a better job than Hodgson next season and I hope we will be able to attract one of them, and one who can get us to play better football than we've seen over the last year or so. I see little point, though, in getting rid of Hodgson before the end of the season unless the three criteria I listed are met.

surely if we're sucked into a relegation scrap then we should entertain the idea of bringing someone in this season? We should be taking points from the next two games (minimum 3) if we don't, the two games after that are harder in Man U and Spurs. Then there are ten games left. Would like to think that Mr Parish has some hard deadlines on when to start pushing certain buttons if our points and performances don't improve. Still, if we somehow bag 4 points from the next two games that should chill things out a bit and we'll likely hobble over the finish line.

As Chris Sutton said, 'surely they don't want to go back to what it was before Hodgson?'

All kicking off again after Leeds and Burnley the latter being a bit of a shocker.

Roy and Ray a respected team they have done a top job here.

A valid comparison by RH to Charlton look what happened to them after Curbishley, wanted the moon didn't they.

Haha, well said. I could literally hear you getting more and more angry the more you wrote!

I am hoping what Roy said has been reported incorrectly or his words taken out of context. If he genuinely said and believes what was reported then he is no longer the sort of manager we want at our club.

I think some on here see things a bit too black and white with regard to what is considered progress. It doesn’t mean going from defensive dross to playing fancy football like Barcelona at their peak or challenging for the Premier League title. There are plenty of grey areas in between.

I would be totally satisfied with finishing in the upper end of the lower half of the table every single season if I saw some effort in the cups and some progress in the direction of the squad. A little bit of quality added here, a few old ‘uns shepherded out the door there, but continual progress all the same within our financial constraints.

However, all I have seen for the last 2 years is a movement in the opposite direction. Players being given contracts they never should have had and a slow but consistent decline in our on field performances. So when some say Roy is the man to stick with I simply ask, why? Where have we improved as a team under him?
