There wasn't enough in Tanganga's shove or reaction to make it a red. On this occasion Wilf's response to Tanganga helped Tanganga lost his head and was sent of a couple of minutes later for a silly foul. I didn't think the second challenged justified a yellow in isolation. Other things that went out way were; - Spur's didn't expect us to play like that. They would have expected us to put everyone behind the ball. Their back 4 would have been expecting lots of crosses into Benteke, bringing on Edouard allowed us to change that - not something they would have been prepared for. - Harry Kane doesn't press well. This allowed us to pass out of the back. At the game, I thought a yellow to Wilf and Tanganga was the correct outcome. However, watching it on MOTD, I thought Tangaga's challenge merited a straight red given that he went for Wilf's face/head. I agree that in isolation the second yellow was a bit soft, but I think justice was done. And I have to say that I can't recall leaving a game that Jon Moss has refereed and having anything positive to say about him, but I thought he did a good job on Saturday.

I think it's fair to say the ensuing melee was 50/50 with Zaha and Tanganga equally culpable. So a yellow for that was fair. The foul, which was basically a high-speed shove to the face, was a yellow, minimum. So in retrospect, Zaha was due a yellow, and Tanganga two yellows for two offenses.
Well he is used to his teammates not backing him, at least now we have some who are willing to pile in. When Shearer says he understands Wilfs reaction you know it was justified

Let's not hold anything back! Yes, it was only one game and Spurs (top team of the league), was lackluster. But we were all over them for most of the game. This might be wishful thinking but one thing about Edouard coming from Celtic is that he may find it a bit easier to find space since most teams he’s been playing against have usually had as many men behind the ball as possible. His goals were typical of how he plays - trying to place the ball rather than blast it.

Certainly this extra competitive edge I would like to attribute to PV, a fiery player in his day, along with a few few other Arsenal players who would be straight over if it went off.

Re the Tanganga foul on Wilf, out of curiosity, I looked at the rules. They say ; '' in addition, a player who, when not challenging for the ball, deliberately strikes an opponent or any other person on the head or face with the hand or arm, is guilty of violent conduct unless the force used was negligible.'' So I think that Tanganga was not challenging for the ball, he was nowhere near it - and therefore a straight red would have been justified. All's well that ends well though !

Made the mistake of reading Garth Crooks' team of the week...bitter much?!! How only Zaha made it into his TotW is quite frankly stupid. He also said we wouldn't have won without the red card, which again sounded like sour grapes. As to the game as a whole, the first half an hour Wilf looked like his recent self but then it all seemed to change the moment he realised he had the beating of the new lad for Spurs. His head seemed to lift and as a confidence player he grew into the game. First half we controlled the game without really threatening, but like at West Ham we came out much stronger in the second half and seemed like the only team looking for a win. Edouard made a difference when he came on as he seemed to instinctively know where to run to when attacking and we have missed a striker like that since I can't remember when. For the second goal Bentenke would probably have been on the edge of the box looking to act as the wall for a one-two with Wilf, whereas Edouard just legged it to the penalty spot trusting Wilf to find him. What I love about Andersen and Guehi is the way if they see space ahead of them they will run into it with the ball, often continuing to stride forward even after passing the ball. Unlike in previous seasons we actually have centre-backs who you don't cringe whenever they're in possession. Gallagher and Kouyate were both guilty of losing possession in front of the back four due to poor touch, but thankfully Spurs were applying little pressure. Against Liverpool we will need to be more careful of that as their front three will punish us for careless errors. Spurs can cry all they like about the referee but whatever his decisions correct or not they were terrible. I questioned them getting Nuno given he is so similar in style to Mourinho and yesterday confirmed what I thought. It was like the 1-1 draw last season when Spurs were incredibly passive, but unlike Saturday we didn't take full advantage. I had wanted Nuno, but it may be we lucked out on not getting Nuno after all. Time will tell.

Good work looking up what the law actually says. Would have taken a brave ref to make that call. Brave ref's don't exist. They are allowing a bit more contact this season, which is a good thing. But players should be going for the ball.

Thought Eduoard showed he’s a poacher. However he’s a different player to Benteke and Benteke deserves some of the credit. 80 minutes physical battles with Benteke being a hold up man for the Spurs players to suddenly have to deal with a different player with 10 men. Bats tried leading our line and couldn’t with any real effect. CB is a focal point. Eduoard did the clever poacher role which we have been crying out for, but CB certainly didn’t have a bad game.

I think they both deserved a yellow (initial foul and Wilfs retaliation)and then Tanganga a second yellow for the altercation after the foul?

If you think that Garth Crooks is bad ( which he always is so at least he's consistent ), then the match report in todays Times takes some beating. It barely mentions the game and instead 90% of the ' write up ' is about Harry Winks

Both reports of our game were disappointing in that they each focused on Spurs shortcomings rather than the Palace. However, Tony Cascarino writing in The Times, and who is not usually very supportive of Palace was positively glowing in his praise, particularly for Zaha. And he had 3 of our players in his TOTW - Mitchell, Gallagher and Zaha.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |
