Sorry to be a pedantic pr1ck. I agree with what you mean and Luka has been a really frustrating disappointment. And we were arguing that whether we should or shouldn’t sell him for £20mil not long ago. Last summer wasn’t it? We’d snap anyone’s arm off for that deal now. I, too, can be a pedantic prick. For example, I simply said that had Luka played we wouldn't have seen PvA's goal. I didn't explain WHY we wouldn't see it. Later in this thread I said that but for Dubravka we would have scored a goal from a corner. I didn't say two goals, because had Cahill's header gone in the whole game would have changed - we might even have lost (although I doubt it given how poor Newcastle were). If onlys in life ae pointless because the whole of life would probably take a different path if the "if only" had occurred.

I'm going to stick up for Luka a bit here. The last time he was out I thought we missed his bite. In this game however Newcastle had only two central midfielders as their set up allowed them to have two marking Zaha constantly. They were therefore outnumbered in centre midfield and it showed. We totally bossed that area throughout the match. I believe we would have done exactly the same if Luka had been playing albeit he might have insisted on taking the set pieces. But that sort of thing is easy to change if someone else is getting better results so it should not be a given that he takes them if he plays. Luka is a stopper and a damn good one at that. He is sort of a mixture of Cabaye and Jedinak although and rather unfortunately for us, does not possess their greatest strengths in abundance. Is he better than Kouyate, McArthur or McArthy, it is very difficult to say. If he doesn't start at Brighton and they begin to dominate the midfield I am sure there will be some who demand his immediate introduction.

I don't disagree regarding bossing the midfield but I'm not sure dead-ball duties will be easily changed where the club's captain is involved. I'd like to think so and in some ways I'd like to see it put to the test. similarly, how likely is it that Roy will drop the club captain once he's well again?

He breaks up play and commits a lot of fouls which can be beneficial to our team especially away from home.Since the start of the 2017-18 season he has picked up 30 yellows and a red.

What was the Jedi's disciplinary record like Willo, I can't recall although do seem to remember he wasn't shy of a booking or two?

Perhaps his drop in form this season is a result of his head being turned end of last season / pre season ... as there were rumblings about other clubs being interested. The same with Wilf ... If they were both motoring like last season, we'd have racked up more points by now ...

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but could Luka not playing against Newcastle had anything to do with his yellow card count, another yellow by a certain date means a ban of i think 3 games

I just felt McCarthy, Kouyate and McArthur were all superb and deserve another crack if all are fit. I appreciate Brighton will show more than Newcastle did, but Saturday was our best showing of the season by far and they were the platform. Just have to hope the 3 if them are fit. It's the right thing to do, regardless of Luka's form. Edited by Ginger Pubic Wig (25 Feb 2020 7.05am)

Has anyone worked out our percentage points with and without him? A lot fewer games without but I'd guess our percentage is better than when he played. We don't get penalties any more but if we did I'd be happy with PVA, and Ayew scored a peach for Ghana in the ANC some months ago. As I have said before, he is undroppable unfortunately. We need to build a constructive midfield as opposed to the destructive one favoured by the manager. No chance with Milivojevic's sideways, backwards and misplaced passing.
