Having an active, determined and innovative Home Secretary would be great. Having someone lacking compassion and with a chip on their shoulder not so. With the issue of the flood of illegals crossing the channel, the criminal gangs organising it and the delays to the processing causing huge problems in accommodating them, we are obviously at a point which demands a rethink in several ways. Apparently the cost of doing this is mopping up around half of our foreign aid budget, which is being diverted to pay for this. So the bill is actually being given to the poor in the developing world! It's a bigger problem than can be solved by the Home Office alone. International action seems imperative to tackle the gangs. How we speed up the processing without compromising our obligations under international law must be a huge challenge, but we must try to do it as the situation is becoming untenable. Totally agree with your last paragraph. Unfortunately many countries seem reluctant “to play ball” especially if they know migrants are determined to move on. What is the answer? I really don’t know

We don't owe the poor in other countries anything. Foreign aid is charity not a legal obligation. What that money is spent on needs to be looked at carefully as often it ends up in the back pocket of local politicians and never even gets to the poor. In a time of economic crisis it is only right that the people of the UK query why we spend so much abroad when people here are in need.

Whether you approve or not we have made commitments, some to relief agencies, that are not being met. We nave already reduced the % of gdp that is budgeted but now that is being raided to pay for this mess. Personally I am proud of our contribution to try to improve the lives of people far less fortunate than ourselves.

We don't just give money to countries but employ professionals like engineers

In any case the saving of our direct contributions to EU administration must have been more than wiped out by the costs of our own additional administration, and loss of trade.

Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance. |
