Given our predicament we were left with little choice.

It is yet to be seen if Tekker's end of season exploits can be carried into next season. I have been and still am sceptical whether he still can be what he should be. That is a 15 goal a season striker.

That said, I'll settle for 10. Is that worth the money? Given the alternatives I would have to say yes.

At the end of the day, we had little choice.

Glass half full.

100% this for those who still wonder why we've extended Benteke's contract. We can now focus whatever transfer/loan fee budget we have on fixing other parts of the squad where we are desperate e.g. CB and midfield.

Extending Benteke's contract was a sensible pragmatic decision given our situation.[/quote]

We need a new ''lame duck'' to replace Wickham in orer to keep Parish happy!

Benteke scored a goal in his last 4 games, in fact he scored 5 goals in his last 7 games. Prolific !

His record over the whole season was a goal very 182 minutes which equates to a goal every 2 games which most top strikers would be happy with.

Thank you Doombear.I do like a good stat !

I believe that in the main, supporters were pleasantly surprised at how Benteke turned around his fortunes and let's hope he carries on the good work next season.

or 31 goals in five season at a cost of nearly 2mil per goal, great value!

He now has 2 seasons to show that his recent form is no flash in the pan. If he does then it will have been worth extending his contract rather than letting him go and forking out £30m on a new striker, money that would be better used on other more pressing needs. Also, if he performs next season, other clubs may even want to buy him for a decent fee, which we might choose to accept if Mateta shows he can do the business.

Tell that to Brentford who have found two strikers Watkin/Toney) that cost no where near 30mil that you are suggesting. Benteke is not a modern day striker he has no pace lacks ability and vision or the desire to press defenders off the ball and he also lacks the necessary ground skills and workrate to be succesful striker in the modern game. No body in the English pl has showing any interest in him and rightly so. He is another white elephant just like Wickham. I respect your views but on this occasion we have to disagree!

Sorry Den but I'm not quite sure what we are disagreeing about. I agree that over the 5 years he's been here Benteke has NOT been good value. However, IMO, given that we really need any transfer funds we have to strengthen and rejuvenate our central defence and midfield, it seems a sensible decision to keep Benteke for the time being now that he has shown a return to some kind of decent form.

As for Watkins and Toney, Brentford bought them to play in the Championship, not in the PL. Although Watkins has done well at Villa (after a £30m move), was he really ready for PL football when he joined Brentford two years earlier? I doubt it. As for Toney, it remains to be seen whether he can hack in the PL, although I was disappointed we didn't go for him ourselves last summer when he was rumoured to be linked with us. Mitrovic at Fulham has shown how scoring lots of goals in the Championship can be very deceptive when it comes to being a PL striker. And as for the £20m Brewster at Sheff U, the less said the better.

Dear doombear, it's great to know that we are mainly on the same page. My concern is that Parish has extended the contract of Benteke without knowing who our next manager is likely to be, if it is Nano as the press are suggesting then I'm concerned that like Klopp before him, Benteke is not going to suite the way he wants to play as Benetke is very limited and really is not mobile enough for the modern game. I agree that we do need to strengthen in both defence and midfield but we do also need a proven goalscorer with pace and vision whether J-P Mateta is that player I do not know, we have not seen enough of him to form an opinion as yet. Like you I agree money is going to be tight and not much of it, coupled with a board where 2 out three of the main player want out the future is somewhat uncertain and of concern!

Yep. If Nuno is our guy, I'm not sure where Benteke fits into that. Jimenez is a ruthless & aggressive striker. Benteke is not.

We're the Arthur over ere!

Then we will sell him with a 2 year contract and visibly improved form.
