We’ll have to agree to disagree then because I don’t agree at all. I think on a number of occasions during his years with us Benteke has been extremely feeble in the air. He has height and is quite good technically for a big guy but he doesn’t attack crosses in the manner a target man should. And I’m pretty sure I’ve heard many commentators note this during games. As for being second in all-time headed goals. This doesn’t surprise me as he’s played in the league for a very long time and prior to his arrival at Palace he was fantastic in the air. I’m talking specifically about his time with us - the vast majority of his goals in the air are ones you’d expect him to get on the end of and score. The fact that Calvert-Lewin, who plays in a team that finished 10th and isn’t much of an aerial target man by any stretch, has scored more headers during the season we’re all waxing lyrical about Benteke kinda says it all. I think Benteke’s link up play has always been underrated and I’m pretty sure it’s the reason Roy rated him so much. But imo people are getting carried away with a brief spell of goals. Football fans are fickle - Batshuayis record at his first spell with the club was very good and the second half of this spell he has barely kicked a ball, yet there probably aren’t many Palace fans who’d want to see him back next season. And yet imo he’s a far better striker than Benteke who would almost certainly out score him if he was given a fair crack of the whip.
He is second (and ahead of the likes of Wood by a long way) in aerial duels won this season, so I'm not sure your argument stands up this season. I agree in previous seasons he has looked a bit feeble. I do agree about the fickleness of fans, but in the case of Bentenke I don't think we've seen a fully fit and confident player for the best part of three years (at least). He is a proven PL so it was really a case of whether he could rediscover his form. Most of us finally gave up and thought he couldn't and then he did - a nice surprise! Whether it lasts is another matter, but I think the club were right to chance it. Batshuayi has only impressed in brief patches since he joined Chelsea. I think he'd do well at a club like Leeds that produces lots of chances, but he offers very little outside 18-yard box other than getting offside. He was never really given much of a chance with us this season, but when he did start he was pretty poor.

i have no issue with giving Tekkers an extension - his form in the 2nd half of the season was impressive and shows that when fit and motivated he is a quality striker. My slight concern is how much we are paying him. His previous wages of c£120k a week were clearly excessive and although he previously signed a 1 year extension on reduced terms i'd be very surprised if there was much of a reduction as he signed this mid season so he must have been happy with the terms. This extension has been sorted quite quickly which suggests new terms must be quite good too. If it is say £100k a week in total i'm hoping it is a lower weekly basic wage and higher bonus element e.g. £60k a week basic, £25k per game and £50k a goal.

Winning aerial duels in various parts of the pitch isn’t some scientific equation that you’re a lethal target man. If you look at the majority of his headed goals this season, they are chances you’d expect him to take. I also think people often cite to his supposed fitness but I’m not sure that’s true, either. When he first joined the club he also had a very poor scoring record until Big Sam turned up. The problem with a striker like Benteke is that you have to literally build a team around him and cater your play around him to get him firing on all cylinders, and imo that’s not a sensible approach for any serious Premier League outfit. Judging Batshuayi on anything this season is ridiculously harsh imo. He wasn’t even given a look in for the most part and the last time he was in a brief 20 minutes against Everton - he scored. His overall record at Palace is far superior to Bentekes. It may well turn out to be decent business to keep him, especially if he’s taken a wage cut. But I’d hope we aren’t hedging on him being our first choice striker going forward.

My question is why are we giving him a contract extension with no manager in place, what’s the point if the new head honcho doesn’t fancy him and never plays him. Is this a case of our new manager has already agreed terms and wants Big Ben in his plans.....,,, I think I may have answered my own question.

I am rather hoping for an upgrade on Andros to arrive. There are plenty of decent crossers of the ball out there who might also provide a bit more trickery and guile down that wing. Andros, on Talk Sport yesterday said he was told players contracts would not be discussed until a new manager was in in place .. he wants to stay in the prem aged 29, but has had ‘offers’ from Turkey (like they all do) . Then of course Tekkers gets his 2 yr extension ..time will tell, we will soon know if he turned up for the last 4 months to get a deal or Roy showing faith in him really paid off.

Great to have this confirmed, just hope he remains injury free over the summer. He has shown what he is capable of, I hope we can get 10-15 goals out of him each of the next two seasons. He was rumoured to have been offered a contract extension a month or two ago. This may be why he can agree to one without a new manager and why others have to wait until the new manager is appointed.

How utterly depressing. Maybe this is so we can get a sale fee for him? Hope he bangs a few in in the Euros and we can finally get rid for £

But I’d hope we aren’t hedging on him being our first choice striker going forward. You can't really judge Batshuayi against Bentenke as one has played a bit part and one has played 5 seasons. The former has scored maybe three important goals, the latter played a huge role in keeping us up under Allardyce and played a big role this season. Going back to your original post on this matter, you said... I don’t think he’s anything like the best header in the league. The stats say he is right up there, especially as we were producing very few chances per game. There were also a few occasions where keepers had to make top-class saves to deny him a headed goal. Inside and outside the box he wins the ball with his head more often than not. That's not a stat, that's just from watching the games. The stats just back it up. None of this covers up the fact that for at least half his time with us he has not been good enough, and I'm still not convinced he knows how to shoot anymore, but my point was that there are very players who have his aerial presence.
