I would not want to let any of our stars go but money talks. The player we have to keep is Zaha he is our match winner, at some point no doubt someone on here will work out how may points Zaha has won for us this season I have no doubt it's the vast majority.

We could live without AWB but if Zaha goes so do we.

That was my question what is the current rate of losses? I thought we offloaded a load of players hopefully that would have eased the wage bill.

We paid up Mutch's contract but although that would have saved a year's wages it probably cost that much to get rid of him.

Lets be clear the losses amount from player trading and not on operating day-to-day. I would imagine most clubs would be the same in our size bracket. IMO our squad is ageing but for a club of our size we do have some very good and valuable assets. We do need to recruit again IMO a striker and central midfield so we either trade or encourage further investment in the club.

If you read the article linked to by bexleydave you will see that's not so as our wage bill plus amortisation as a percentage of income is the second highest in the Premiership in the period under review.

Not being in the know I would guess the reason our wage bill is so high is down to the quality of players we have. Compare what we have to say Burnley, Cardiff, Newcastle etc. Like they say you only get what you pay for, I'm sure SP only pays what he has to!! Like I said before for us to compete next season we only need a couple in.

And not long after you’ll have posters complaining we’re not spending enough. That isn’t the problem. The problem is spending too much on and paying too much to a certain few players because our setup, mainly scouting, has been an absolute joke. I know we were promoted before we were ready but still, some of the players we’ve signed you’d think stevie wonder was our chief scout watching them just before we decided to sign them.

Selling some a big player or 2 won’t be a surprise to me. We’ve only sold Bolasie and Gayle so far anyway.

Zaha, Benteke, Sakho in the £120-130k bracket are eye watering figures. The next group on £80k are high enough.

Apart from Wilf it’s not just because we wanted better quality but because we had no idea who we wanted to sign apart from those with big red flashing ‘come and get me’ hooters above their heads. You can include the managers we’ve hired there as well, apart from FDB. Even Hodgson was an obvious choice. The surprise was that he was still in the job market, not that he would be a good candidate for survival.

Thanks for this link. At last I understand what "amortisation" means, sometimes I feel like the only Holer who is not a chartered accountant!
One thing is clear...players' wages will ultimately destroy our club if we continue like this. If only there was a way of paying a basic wage added to a performance-related bonus, the idea of paying a certain player £130 k for ten minutes a week and missed sitters is truly insane.

In addition to player costs there are also Manager costs which will be higher for us than many of our peers due to our revolving door manager policy with FdB's payoff included in these accounts and Pardew's exit fee in the previous year

Okay, the accounts are out and player purchases have hit us hard. So what do you think our 1st X1 is worth in the market today IMO - 245m?
