Shame to see him injured yesterday. An assist for the first goal. The guys quietly improving and is always an aerial threat in the area.

This is a good article. Well, I thought so anyway. Probably sums up how most of us feel about the guy after Monday night.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

I have to admit, as infuriating as he has been these past few years I've always maintained a soft spot for him. I couldn't of wished for anyone else to score that goal the other night!
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

I’ve fallen into the very same trap - thinking he’ll come good in the end and focusing on his other qualities in the meantime. He won’t though. We can do better for the wage he will command. Sod’s law he’ll end up somewhere else and be really good for them! Will always be remembered for that goal against Brighton tho!

You kind of get the feeling that was a John Barnes vs Brazil moment for Benteke. Barnes went on to get a shed load more caps for England but generally did f all. I hope I’m wrong but that goal followed by a contract extension and another season of general mediocrity beckons.

Benteke is colossally overpaid. Monumentally, mind blowingly overpaid in fact. But as a player he still has value to us, even if its nothing like as great as his financial cost. If we release benteke we'd stop wasting money for sure, but I wouldn't presume we would get a better player in his place. The transfer fee and wages for a new player who is even as good as benteke might add up to a lot more than just keeping what we have. Mad but possible.

Benteke is not worth his reported £120pw however I would have no problem offering him a contact at half that. If he didn't want to accept a pay cut his options are limited, not sure many PL clubs would pay that salary and nobody in the Championship. In Europe many of the top clubs have admitted they are in financial trouble whilst in China the era of mega pay deals now seems over. He may still get a pay day in the USA but other than that I think he will have to take a pay cut with or without us.
