Honestly some people defending the ref are deluded. I’m so happy we got the call as we deserved the win 100% but we got lucky. If it was on the other foot and zaha had been pushed when running at speed and booked, we’d be absolutely fuming. Everyone saying there is no contact with Cahill, why did Cahill spin around and drop to the floor holding his leg if there is no contact. Yes we deserved the win, yes I’m happy with the call, but be honest, the ref made an error that we benefited from. With the greatest of respect I disagree but divergent opinions are all part of the rich tapestry in such forums. I have been accused many times of supporting referees come what may and NOT admitting they have ever made a mistake but I would suggest this is unfair as I have always maintained that they do err from time to time and I would be deluded if I concluded thay are correct 100% of the time. I do feel with all honesty that Kevin Friend was absolutely right and proper in blowing for an infringement but of course others have a different opinion which I respect but take an alternative viewpoint.

Kevin Friend was whistle happy, he was blowing for even the slightest touch. Grealish knew this and thought that by flinging himself to the ground he would get a free kick or a pen. However Grealish didn't take into account was the number of times he had already gone down very easily (and dramatically) and doing it this time was the last straw.
It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses. |

Yes this detail of Cahill holding his leg makes me unsure. Can’t believe there hasn’t been any other angles or close ups. This is what a lot of players do when they think there might be a close decision, they try and deflect attention from the situation by pretending they are injured. Seen it hundreds of times to try and escape cards. Friend honestly thought he made no contact otherwise it would have been a simple penalty to give. I have slowed it down frame by frame and I cannot see sufficient contact with Cahill to warrant a penalty. Now whether there was a push by Zaha that led to him diving in spectacular fashion is another argument.

I've looked at the incident time and time again. If there is any contact at all it is Wilf outside the box and that is minimal. Cahill withdraws his leg before Grealish goes to ground. What the ref saw was Grealish going down easily on 3 or more occasions during the match which probably influenced his decision to call the free kick for simulation. It is irrelevant whether the ball goes in the net as the ref has already blown his whistle. The fact it did go into the net is why the pundits are blaming VAR for not intervening. The only time I could see VAR coming into play on this passage of play was if they could clearly see Cahill bring down Grealish which would then mean a penalty. You cannot allow a goal to stand regardless of VAR if the whistle has been blown as this signifies a stoppage in play and will have been heard by the players which then, may or may not influence how they challenge for the ball. In this instance I don't think hearing the whistle would have stopped the shot or the goal, but that is not the point, the play has been stopped. The VAR would have reviewed the challenge by Cahill and taken the same view as the ref that he did not make contact and therefore it was a reasonable decision by the ref to blow up against Grealish for simulation. At the end of the day this is one of those decisions that can go against you just as easily as it goes for you. I am pleased that we have had the rub of the green against both Utd and now Villa as we had our fair share of poor calls last year. Just my take on it but I thought Lineker and Co were bang out of order on MOTD last night. Every word exactly right.

If Jenas thinks that was the worst refereeing decision ever then he clearly hasn't been to many Palace matches.

Totally agree with Tickled Pink. It was either going to be a free kick or simulation. The goal was completely irrelevant. Lineker and Jeans to far up their own backsides.

Having just witnessed the incident on TV, my view is that the referee was spot-on with his decision.Grealish took off as though he was on the end of a swimming pool and quite rightly was penalised by the referee. All this hogwash that the referee was too quick on his whistle etc etc.He saw it as a dive and didn't need to wait at all before blowing - there was no 'Advantage' situation. Very rare that I agree with Willo on referees, but this time I do. I think there was a touch from Zaha outside the box that caused Grealish to partially lose his balance and might perhaps have been a free kick. Inside the box Cahill stuck out a leg but withdrew it very quickly, I don't think there was any contact. Grealish stabbed the ball away and then dived over thin air where Cahill's leg might have been but wasn't. A yellow card was not unreasonable. Having said that, if Palace had had a goal chalked off in those circumstances I'd have been pretty upset.

That's a ridiculous statement by Jenas. It was a marginal call that looks perfectly reasonable under scrutiny and Friend was entitled to make it. It was not a blatant error by any reading. The commentators are still frothing on about VAR. The circumstances when it is used have been defined and you can't go outside those. There is also clearer guidance now on whether to overturn a ref's decision. The mistake has to be clear-cut rather than a matter of judgment or discretion. The same arguments have surrounded VAR in cricket, where the umpire is allowed discretion and a margin of error. There may be some fuzzy edges, but VAR is 100 times better than not being able to overrule blatant mistakes. One other thing: it's actually all Tekkers' fault. If he had held up the ball, instead of taking a hopelessly optimistic shot that led to their goal kick that led to the Grealish incident, none of this would have happened.

According to the match report the VAR official confirmed he would not have changed the referee's decision to book Grealish for diving.

Just heard Mark Halsey on Talksport the referee could have allowed play to continue and then checked with VAR after the goal was scored. Once he blew the whistle the only decision VAR could consider is did Grealish dive or was it a penalty. Halsey felt it wasn't a dive.

Only on this one he (obviously) ran the risk of a penalty being given because it makes it appear he did clatter Grealish. The ref should’ve let the thing play out and then gone to VAR, even though VAR report says it wouldn’t have been (going on 2nd opinion again).

The pyramid to beat all pyramids!! Find out what team is in which division, eg which division is Coppull United in? |
