I tend to disagree re the keeper. We did everything reasonable to get Guaita & it was Getafe that put up a wall. Once it had been reported in Spain that we had a deal for him to join us on a free when his contract expires they changed their tune & tried to get a replacement in. They failed to do this (the replacement they found won't be joining until next season) so said a final 'no' to the deal. Hopefully their loss & our gain in the medium term - assuming there is an agreement & he does actually join us. Plan B was Ronnow & that was simply too late for Brondby to get someone in for which you can lay blame with Parish/Dougie but it is probably fair to say they were operating within a budget & FFP constraints & confident the Amadou situation would've been resolved. Hindsight's a wonderful thing, let's just hope WH starts performing better with a decent back four in front of him like he has in the past, although that relies on Sakho & Tomkins staying fit for the rest of the season... The Independent reported we tried to lower the price by £2 mil. This could explain the stall and then acceptance of our offer but then too late regarding a replacement. Sounds plausible and very Parish. We'll probably sign an inferior keeper for even more in the summer. Agreement to join us? As he's a free agent in the summer he's allowed to speak to us now but join the highest payer in June, whereas we'll be trying to sign someone 2 months later. Probably our best manager wanted a keeper and we could've got a highly rated one. Let's hope this isn't the final thing to put Roy off the job.

The only fact is that the same making all of this supposition weren't at any of the negotiations or any of the club management meetings regarding any prospective players coming to the club and hence knew absolutely nothing about what was being done to bring new players in.

You can't liken agents to sharks because the shark is an alpha predator, not a parasite. More like leeches I think. Agreed. Sharks add some value to the ecosystem. Agents however...

True ... but we can all see the outcome and tbf it's not overwhelming is it? A case of fighting the good fight for another 4 months whereas we might have cruised it.

This post has been merged from a topic called 'Swimming with the Sharks ' by Midlands Eagle I'd like to see us implement a well publicized rule that we make one take-it-or-leave-it bid that must accepted and finalized with the player within 48 hours. It doesn't preclude us warning clubs that we will bid for x player. But it just feels like we try to be clever and it backfires.

With that rule we wouldn't have signed Sorloth or Sakho this season for example.
Employee of the month is a good example of how someone can be both a winner and a loser at the same time. |

We might have bid 24m for Sakho and Liverpool, mindful it was our best price, mightn't have tried to screw us for a few more mill. Total price of 17m or so for Sorloth? I'll eat my arse if we didn't over pay given he cost them about 350k and was still very green (No matter how good he was looking for his team). Something very fundamental needs to be adjusted in how we operate.

Too many fall for the hype of big names in football and I'm very glad the club's management doesn't. Edited by europalace (02 Feb 2018 9.13am)

Us mere mortals can only go on what is reported in the Press. If you believe what has been reported to be true then you could conclude that ; 1. The club seems to expend a lot of energy pursuing players without doing sufficient due diligence. Example -Ibrahim...how can it only emerge at the last moment that the player won't be released as they can't recall another of their players from a loan ? 2. We leave it too late to implement a possible ' plan B ' and then fail to sign a player than wasn't even our initial first choice. 3. We seem unable to reach a price compromise with other clubs. For Guaita for instance. Completing transfers, especially in today's global market,is a minefield and I suspect we don't know the half of what really goes on. But if we are looking at our business in terms of players than can make an immediate contribution and compete for a starting place, I would have to say it's been a poor window as I don't believe the issues that Roy had with the squad have been addressed.

But to be a bit devil's advocate, even high level professionals use recruitment consultants to steer their careers. In the case of footballers the majority are a bit dim; some are absolute morons. They absolutely need someone to negotiate for them in a very difficult and highly lucrative market. (It's a pity they are all cnuts.)

A win on Sunday with some other results going in our favour and any criticism of our transfer activity will disappear into the ether. A defeat on the back of an indifferent performance and there will be foam-flecked frenzy wih great dollops of hissing and snarling.
