Ah well 5 mins left before we are put our of our misery....one small spark is I at least won a couple of bets with mates as I had us not to get out of the pool. Beaten by a much better side tonight but with a whimper really....tonight and the Saffers v Scotland game showed how much behind the SH we all are.... Radical change needed in English rugby to fulfil its potential - which won't happen

Australia looked very good. On that form they have to be a strong contender for winning the competition.

We have failed every stress test. Today we lost to the better team, last week the best team lost due to poor discipline, not the kick for the corner. Poor management in taking burgess over Burrell. The bring Farrell in for ford last week, ford being the man who has run the team for the last year. Poor decision before that in not supporting bringing Stefon Armitage to Bath. Review starting now in private, Bomber is not a bad coach but he needs better support and improved leadership on the pitch. What ever the decision the outcome should be to build to winning the World Cup 2019, 6N tournament and Atumn games are building blocks. We just need a 4 year plan, we have players who can deliver.

Gutted for us. If we lose against Australia AND Wales though it's fair to say we deserved to go out. If we'd got a draw in the Wales match who knows. These things are often decided on the margins. I'll suport Wales, Scotland and any underdogs from this point on.

Apologies if this has already been covered but....can anyone explain why three nations that would be seeded in any normal competition (SA, Wales and England) are scrapping over two qualifying places. whereas NZ seem to be in a group (with all due respect to those teams) of "unseeded" nations. It seems a bit risky to have the hosts so likely to go out in the group stage. I'm not just wearing arrogant "England"- tinted spectacles as I accept they were outclassed by Oz, and love to see emerging rugby nations like Japan doing well, but England have a record of doing pretty well in the Rugby WC don't they. Seems a bit of a duff format to me.

Well. Were out - no surprise there. I love the underdog (reason I started supporting Palace) and as my wife's nephew is married to a Japanese girl I will now support them. Gogo Maru!!
Invited to SP after Xmas 1969 by new stepfather and his best mate. Freezing cold and lost 5-1. Been a fan ever since!!!! |

Seems a bit of a duff format to me. Because Wales made an unholy Horlicks of the Autumn internationals three years ago and dropped out of the top 8 at exactly the wrong moment. This made us the unseeded team. We are notoriously bad during the autumn so it's mildly surprising that we have done as well as we have.

Yeah but can anyone put the ball in straight? No, and furthermore they don't even try. When you have a hooker who can't hook (like Tom Youngs) the 9 pretty much feeds straight into the second row these days. In fact, he does it even if he has a hooker who can hook. For whatever reason, it's simply something that refs have ceased to police anymore. I suspect that this will soon change (unlike football, rugby rules tend to evolve season-by-season) but it's a great pity now because the art of hooking has been somewhat lost and hookers who are good in the loose (again, like Tom Youngs) gain reputations despite the fact that they lack the core skill of their position. The focus on the front three is really now on disrupting the other side rather than overtly winning the ball and on the rare occasions a scrum is won against the head, it's usually the result of overpowering the side with the ball rather than hooking technique. The focus on disruption is really why the Tight Head has become probably the second most important player in rugby after the out half. If he doesn't do his job, the ball never gets back to 10. Scrums are so low now it is impossible for the hookers to actually hook the ball if it is put in straight. After last seasons change of rule Scrums have got better but there's still too many calls where the ref is at best making an educated guess.
I agree about the referee guessing though. That's the point that's the rules. Put in straight and suddenly some of the issues around scrummaging disappear. If we follow the Antipodeans soon we will allow the forward pass.
As for last night, we were comprehensively beaten by a superior team. No shame in that.
