Could there be a consensus?! There is a value to learning per se. There is generally a value to taking a degree, including an economics one (and speaking as someone who did a part economics degree). But, there is not necessarily any automatic correlation between academic study/achievement and "general nous" or business acumen, in the sense of the university study having led to it. Take my profession as a lawyer. Many of the sharpest and most effective lawyers I've come across don't have a law degree. The skills they have are completely unconnected to those relating to and good for the academic study of law.Similarly, some of the sharpest and most successful business people generally I've come across never went to uni and often thy are somewhat more savvy than many of those who have.

I asked him what an economics degree actually involved, he hasn't yet replied to that. For these reasons I called him ignorant. I would like to withdraw my comment dismissing Landsdale's opinion as he is an old white man who typically are pro Brexit. It wasn't well thought through. (However, on the same note you can't dismiss highly intelligent academics because they have beards and sandles!) If I have insulted anyone I apologise or if I have been arrogant (I have occasionally been accused of this in real life (at least I'm consistent)). But my arrogance does not in the slightest dismiss the notion that we are far better inside than outside of the EU, for many reasons given above. Edited by big_palace_fan (05 May 2016 2.35pm) It was Peter Hargreaves' opinion you were dismissing! Clearly on reflection you have rightly withdrawn it. Elephants value the older member's of their herd and rely on them to find water in periods of extreme drought. You dismiss old people's opinions at your peril young man! My attack on Economists and students was obviously in retaliation and for a wind-up. I apologise for insulting or offending anyone I still think that Economists rely too much on assumptions for their forecasts and quite often get them wildly wrong.

You clearly have a whole host of prejudices on students, lefties, muslims, economists, lecturers and God knows who else, so I find it very rich for you to accuse someone of bigotry. Get off your high horse Mr Stalker. You'll find me to be a very reasonable and fair poster with those that post sensibly. However, when someone has an attack on me, I come out guns blazing with no holds barred. On this occasion, he made the outrageous assertion that old white men's opinions are not valid, so I sent in the attack dogs. With you, it is different... you seem to stalk my posts with your childish snidey remarks and put downs on just about every topic I get involved in. If you keep it up I'll continue to have spats with you, but you could grow up and just ignore my posts. You'll see that I have apologised in the post above following his retraction of his insult to me. I have no gears to grind with you or anybody else on here, so I'd appreciate your co-operation.

This is literally what economics is haha. Producing statistical models of existing data based on past events and behaviours to predict future events and behaviours to as closer degree of certainty as possible. I found it fascinating to study.

Why do I have to ignore your posts? I have as much right to challenge them as anyone else. I don't know why you have this perception that I am stalking your posts - I read the thread, and commented - that's how a forum works. I have no issues with you, but I'm not going to hold off challenging a point of yours that I disagree with just because you perceive it as 'childish' or 'snidey'. Fair play for apologising.

Sorry, but it does seem that you have been "on my case" previously.... and regarding this topic, you steamed in and made no reference or allowance for the fact that I was provoked before I had a go at students. I have no problem with anyone challenging the points I make on any topic, and if as you say, you have no issues with me, then I look forward to our next debate. I am not above apologising when I'm wrong or have behaved in an unsocial or aggressive/unfair manner. Regards
