Yes I know it's Owen Jones, (cue character assassination of author rather than address points) but he shows how few people we take in comparison to others.

He's back from the the Sinn Fein summer school in Ireland then - where he praised Sinn Fein’s ‘progressive’ politics.

You think Sein Fein are a progressive party? Surprised but agree. They have made enormous steps to ensure a relatively peaceful NI today as have the old dodgy Unionist parties. Both deserve post 1995(?) plaudits. A whole generation have grown up without bombs and sectarian butchers. Thank fvck.

Well of course the use of the word 'progressive' these days usually really means 'doomed to failure'. Any daft policy is wheeled out as 'progressive' as if that makes it less daft.

Of course the relative peace in Northern Ireland is to be welcomed. But I think you need to thank a certain Mr. Blair too don't you - as well as the bigoted Unionists and murderous Sein Fein/IRA. Apart from not trying to blow us up any more, there is bugger all else to thank the IRA for, and Owen Jones's praise of them (along with Corbyn's) shows how poor their judgement is.

Well they are a progressive party, have been ever since Gerry Adams. Doesn't mean you have to like them or respect them, but it is pretty much the case that they reformed the Provisional IRA and were instrumental in the end of the troubles and disarmnement of the Provisional IRA.

That's progress I guess.

Sinn Fein are not progressive, they are living in a financial fairy land. If they ever got elected, they would bankrupt (again) the country.

As for Northern Ireland, it ended when Labour realised that equality for all in North Ireland should be a right.

Quote jamiemartin721 at 07 Aug 2015 11.46am

I'd focus on why its economically feasible for an EU working migrant to travel to work in the UK, rather than someone in the UK that's out of work. The Government (this and the last) have essentially colluded with British Companies to allow access to a cheap labour force from within the EU (notably those countries which the exchange rate made working in the UK more lucrative than settling in the UK).

Consequently wages were kept artificially low, especially for low and non-skilled labour jobs, which made them more 'competative', and allowed them greater profitability, by reducing their wage bills.

If you want to blame someone, its Labour and the Conservatives, who systematically sold this countries working class down the river, for the benefit of the upper working classes, shareholders and middle classes.

Pointing the finger at migrant workers isn't the solution, the solution is tying UK wages to inflation and the real cost of living, and investing in relocating the long term unemployed into areas of demand for employment.

Is the right answer and also one of the biggest reasons for controlled migrancy.

I used to work with a lot of Poles in my last job who had come over, have now settled in the UK for good who now bemoan immigrants undercutting them and how they can now not afford to work for peanuts as they once did.

How are the bombings, shootings etc by the Provisional IRA going, and are there republican representatives in the NI government?

That's progressive by NI standards for my entire lifetime. Aren't they also pushing for gay marriage and abortion rights?

No it doesn't, please learn to read.

"Unemployed Britons in richer EU states outnumber claimants from those countries in UK"

They outnumber us 65,000 to 30,000 according to that article. Most of that 30,000 British claiming is in Ireland, over a third of it. I dare say that many of those "British" would actually consider themselves "Irish" but happen to have a British passport.

In reference to what might have been earlier in this thread or another.

Asylum seekers in the UK can expect around 36.50 a week in benefit, in France its about 56.00

Took me bloody ages to find that out.

Many would argue Sinn Fein are no longer a republican party and therefore Northern Ireland has no republican representatives.

As for Gay Marriage, they are pushing for that. I don't think they will talk about abortion until after the Irish election in 2016 as any promotion of abortion will hurt them.
