How could player wages be capped to make any real impact given that the top earners are on half-a-mil-a-week already? Would UEFA put a figure on it e.g. 600k? That's not going to make any different to the situation we're currently in and I can't imagine top earners taking a pay cut, as much as I'd like to see that happen.

I really don't know what the enforceable solution is - a better version of FFP that doesn't allow such ridiculous amounts of debt to be accrued by clubs?

The way it works in the NFL is that the teams have a maximum amount to spend on wages and it’s up to them how share it out.

And a lot more clarification as to what constitutes debt. Brighton have been “loaned “millions by Bloom and it doesn’t seem to matter

Well a mortgage is a debt, but is offset by an asset - and Brighton have spent a lot on infrastructure.

The issue I have with this whole this is that in actual fact the concept of the ESL is not a bad one.

Who Doesn't want to have a league which includes *only* the best teams in the World playing, rather than the over inflated competition which includes some dross opposition from some second rate eastern european league that is the Champions league.
Also, a league with the 'most supported'( ?) clubs in the world will naturally attract higher TV audiences which therefore means more TV money. I get it.

UEFA have been up in arms about it - but lets not quibble the fact that they are only mortified because it'll be in direct competition to them and will devalue their product.

They are supposed to govern all football in Europe, and this also a challenge to their monopoly of power, which to be frank, isn't a bad thing.

The issue is how they have gone about it, and how they have the sanctimonious right-to-be-there-every-year attitude. They have not talked to anyone in footballing world, and have not considered anyone but themselves.
Perez's argument that they all have massive debt that they have to find a solution to - but the answer is not to 'get more money'. It's to reduce the simply terrifying outgoings that these clubs have - Wages. And whose responsible for paying these wages? We'll, I blame a lot of that to the frankly ridiculous electorial ownership system that Real Madrid have in Place. "If you vote for me I'll buy x", meaning that they end up spending millions just to live up to their Manifesto. this pushes the price up for everyone else. It's not the only reason, (yes that'll be the Agents), but It's a big factor.

Football is run as a Business nowadays. it's unavoidable - and that's OK. But this does bring it's own challenges. Money gained from Europe is so much of a prize nowadays, that clubs cannot forecast as a business if they cannot say if they're going to get it or not. so the idea of no relegation appears.
Unfortunately that's pretty much everything that Football Stands against, and is intrinsic to the Structure of all leagues. Again This is not the answer.

What's required is a system whereby not getting into European competition is not the Death of their finances, one where any team can qualify if they are good enough, and when they actually get to the Creme de la Creme, they are not forced to play horribly inferior opposition.
UEFA talk about Expanding the CL. But I say the opposite - Reduce it, increase the group sizes (or only have one) if you have to. Make it so only the best in the respective countries get in.
Expand the Europa. let this be the competition that the 3rd team in belgium get into, as a way of allowing them to progress.
Restructure TV money to allow it to filter into the Leagues of the highest achieving teams. i.e. If Real madrid win, and Arsenal are runners up, then the Spanish League(not RM) gets more money that the PL.

Point is it's not a bad idea. just Executed by a bunch of tosspots.

End of ramble.

I've got an idea for the "Champions" League (crazybadger). Just allow the team that wins each country's domestic league to enter it!

Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes)

You mean the good old days when teams were unseeded. Liverpool versus Nottingham Forest first round.

I think your onto something here. You could call it something fitting like `European Cup`. You got me thinking now, you could pair this alongside to giving some sort out reward for winning your domestic cup competition, maybe have all them in a European competition, guess you could call it `European Cup Winners Cup`

It's too straightforward though, will never happen.

Wild and crazy thinking. Next thing will be suggesting replacing pointless internationals with a Home Championship.

What a load of bs. “Evolve and excite fans around the world!” And there you have it, basically change to suit the US and Far East markets. Are they really trying to persuade fans they did it for the football pyramid The arrogance beggars belief.
Interesting they say steps being taken to withdraw, perhaps Perez was correct.

Yes, which reminds me of an important detail....I'd let the previous season's winner take part 'n' all.
