Early level crossings had a flagman in a nearby booth who would, on the approach of a train, wave a red flag or lantern to stop all traffic and clear the tracks. Manual closable gates were later introduced that barricaded the roadway. The first US patent for such crossing gates was awarded on 27 August 1867 to J. Nason and J.F. Wilson both of Boston.

When has this ever happened? I'd smash all there Windows, drag them out the car and set them alight, then put the flames out with a shovel. C*nts. Perhaps better to just steal their car, do a robbery or similar and then leave it back as though nothing happened.

Anyone who uses the term "buddy" or worse still "matey" In fact I'd go so far as to say anyone using the latter should have the bubble bath of the same name inserted cap first up the arse so they fart bubbles for weeks for being such a prat.

Thank you for the information. I've actually got TWO such 'Level Crossings' quite close together and I would have to go way out of my way on exitting the village to avoid them. What makes it worse with one of them, not only can you get a build up of cars before the gate opens, once it does open you get this build up at the busy roundabout shortly after and you can be stuck here for a while as well. Bloody annoying and often the air in my car is "Blue" much to the annoyance of my wife.

Oh. I have to say that I do the latter. Not just saying that because I want the bubble bath experience. I usually say it to girls that are too feminine to be just called "mate" or "fella" but at the same time I don't want them (or their big husband) thinking I am trying to get some game time with their fanny.

There are still jobs in Ireland as Level Crossing gate keepers - which annoys me as it is easy and pays surprisingly well.
