In this instance there is a Greek Court order, which Germany declines to pay or recognise the validity of on the technical basis a "full and final" deal was done years ago (at an undervalue for Greece) covering everything arising during WW2.I haven't looked into it enough yet to form a view on the underlying merits or otherwise of that legally.I am not aware that the German government disputes the facts of the massacre etc.

In terms of the bigger overall picture, according to the Mail, the overall sum due to Greece in "reparations" according to the Greek government:

"includes the cost of a 10 billion euro forced Nazi loan made by the Bank of Greece and the return of archaeological treasures.
The revised figures amount to nearly 10 per cent of Germany's GDP.

...Berlin paid 115m deutschmarks to Athens in 1960 in compensation – a fraction of the Greek demand.
Greece says this did not cover payments for damaged infrastructure, war crimes and the return of the forced loan."

Let alone "justice" for the relatives of 40,000 people who were estimated to have starved to death just in Athens...

And then the German Government act horrified/outraged when the Greeks have the audacity to play the same game and raise the not nonsensical technical legal argument that the bank debts are "odious" and as such void in law.

Back to the specific massacre Court debt...clearly a "moral" debt and maybe a valid legal one too. So,interesting the seeming difference between the German government's stance towards the morality (and use of technical legal arguments to try to get out of them ) of debts owed to banks and debts owed to people arising from the massacre of their relatives.

Looking after the bottom line of banks rather than the bottom line of ordinary people? Shurely Shome Mishtake

Right.... it seems the Greeks have submitted their proposals and according to Robert Peston are exactly the same terms they rejected a month ago (higher taxes, lower pensions, economic reform etc)...

I think the Greeks have been playing a game of brinkmanship..... but they 'brinked' first.

This weeks hardships with banks close to running out of money and the public coming to their senses has pulled them back from the edge.

Time to go back into the markets, rather than holding cash for me.... should be a nice rise on the back of this news!

Tourist bookings from Germany are significantly down on previous years which can only increase Greece's desirability as a holiday destination.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

Stefan Molyneux's take on who should pay for the financial crises.
Surprisingly I think people like Nick will enjoy the video.

Fvck it. Let's invade and financially rape Germany. They've had it coming for a century now. More if we include those pesky Saxons. Pay off Greece's date and indulge ourselves in a bit of lebensraum and decongest the UK.

We'll give the Krauts something to do to earn their keep.

Classic case of Syrizaphrenia. They say one thing, put it to the people and do the opposite. More twists to come though. Must be getting on for half a trillion in funds loaned now. So glad we didn't join euro as no doubt we would have been stung for about 60 billion based on German and French figures which in the recent economic climate would have been damaging.

Nope it's not my name

It's all gone quiet on here from the Greece lovers...LOL

It appears that most of the EU delegates held my view of Greece's economic credentials.... untrustworthy, incompetent and largely corrupt.

Part of the deal done is to insist that regular external checks are carried out to ensure they are sticking to the agreed plan and not cooking the books again.

Be interesting to see whether the deal is ratified.

Bizarre that you enjoy petty point scoring about something so serious.

Reading through the reforms demanded they seem so restrictive on Greece it's hard to see where any organic economic growth is going to come from in their economy. They have such little wiggle room it seems that all this deal will do is kick the can down the road for a little bit longer until we get to a similar position in a year or two.

No I don't... I just object to your petty attempts to discredit every point I make on the rare occasions you are not posting "Bender".

I'm happy to see the EU taking a hard line with Greece who have been taking the p1ss for decades rather than caving in like pussies as you would advocate.

There is some middle ground between 'caving in like pussies' and placing a complete stranglehold on the economy.

You were agreeing with those on here suggesting the debt be written off....... that is not middle ground.
