It seems to me that Boris is being stitched up in what is no better than a kangaroo court.

All that matters is that lessons will be learned, but this looks like a blame game being played out to satisfy those who want retribution.

I agree, as the UK just went along with every other country more or less. Except Sweden, New Zealand and Ireland. Obviously, you know what they did. Outcomes in the UK are also quite similar to most countries. The whole thing seems like blame Boris when, realistically, he just did what everybody else did. If he did it in a more bullish way - who cares? As for the party - the police investigated that and it has been reported by the media ad nauseam. I don't think the enquiry is anything to do with that anyhow. What will we do? Blame every leader/ government across the world? As I've stated, perhaps look no further than China and get angry - but of course that would be racist like Trump. We couldn't possibly blame the actual cause of the virus. Let's blame the response, despite it being what people who support this enquiry wanted.

What a surprise.

He said, she said nonsense helps no one.

This kind of questioning would not be allowed in court, so why is it allowed here?

Awaits the usual waffle.

Because it isn’t a court. It’s not finding guilt or innocence. It’s an enquiry intended to learn any lessons that might assist if and when it happens again.

That’s not waffle. It’s fact. I trust you can tell the difference.

The fact that most countries reached similar conclusions ought to be reassuring given they all knew the same limited amount at the time decisions were made.

The enquiry is not into the origin or apportioning blame. It’s learning lessons.

If that was the case why did the lead lawyer spend all that time reviewing sweary Whatsapp messages, not relevant to lesson learned.

Covid Contracts. Money thrown to mates, with no come-backs.

That's my biggest gripe. And of course the care home deaths. And the parties, and,...and..

There are genuine concerns but, again, I'm not sure they're in the remit of this inquiry. I haven't read its remit by any means, just the reporting on the inquiry so could be mistaken.
As far as I know, Ireland had a tougher lock down but still the care home deaths. The contracts should be part of a criminal hearing in my opinion. I think the parties have been investigated and charges issued, or not. So again, not sure the inquiry is looking into any of the actual issues of concern as, I presume if police have investigated the parties that's that - unless further breaches are found and the laws are still in place (which I presume they're not as they would have been emergency measures enacted by parliament temporarily). If there are pending charges then, presumably, this inquiry will not prejudice any ongoing legal cases.

It is. It’s establishing the situation at the heart of government. An ordered, calm environment produces more measured decisions.

The inquiry is a complete waste of money, as were the lockdowns, and as are much of government's activities.

Well spotted.

Allow me to also state the obvious.

You are a bitter Remainer who wants to see Johnson punished for Brexit.

Yep.

They are all lockdown supporters, they had made their minds up before this enquiry and are only interested in hearing the views that chime with what they want to write.

History won't regard it well.

I certainly believe he is a political opportunist who used Brexit to achieve what he wanted and I have scant regard for him because of that.

However as those with better memories than you will recall I was supportive of him and the government during the early days of the pandemic when he managed to stay calm and statesman like. Less so when his personal behaviour was revealed. Now that the chaos behind the scenes is being laid bare a more nuanced view is possible.

I don’t want anyone “punished” for anything unless they break the law. If they do a poor job then they get replaced, which is exactly what did and should have happened to Johnson.

How anyone can even contemplate knowing the personal opinions of those involved in running the enquiry beats me. They are all highly qualified advocates, barristers and a very senior Judge. Their master is always their brief and they leave personal views at home.

Accusing them of being lockdown supporters is the kind of nonsense we get from Trump in the USA when he attacks those who uphold the law. They aren’t. They are doing their job.
