3 squad players is a gamble but it is not an outrageous one. Roy has the tactical knowledge and skill to keep us up but he does need a bit of luck with injuries. One or two more in key positions and we'll go down. I hope that if we stay up Roy has been promised some proper signings in the summer.

Indeed. Ordure has been heaped on Parish and Freedman without anyone knowing all the facts about the complex, convoluted and protracted discussions and the sheer frustrations these can cause. Without a doubt the club have worked like trojans to secure targets but as in life you don't always get what you want. The Recruitment team do NOT just burst into life during the 'Window' - a great deal of effort is expended before the 'Window' opens but this is just not recognised or appreciated.Supporters can be critical of course but there are often good reasons why more signings haven't come to fruition. Its a good shout that we fans do not know what has actually gone on with individual situations and negotiations. All we can see is who signs and who doesnt, and what the parties publicly state. I am OK with us missing out on Amadou, as I dont think its a vital signing. Sorloth might come good, he looks like he can play a bit. Jach is one for the future and at 2 mil, who cares if he is a flop. And Rakip may turn out to be good also but isnt fit. The big issue for me is that our manager made a point of stating many, many times that we needed to get a keeper in. We should have actually addressed this in the last window, which compounds not addressing it in this window. Signing another goalkeeper was more important than the Jach and Rakip signings. We desperately also needed a striker so that was on a par with the goalie signing, especially with Sako now crocked. To my first point, I agree with you that we dont know what goes on, but something doesn't smell right with our approach to transfers. It seems to me that Parish has put his pride ahead of getting another keeper in and meeting our manager's (not lofty) expectations. He can now laugh at Getafe in the summer when we sign the guy for free, but what about between now and then when we really, really urgently and desperately needed to sign another keeper. It seems that we played chicken with Getafe. We like to play chicken in transfer windows, sometimes it works out like with Sakho. Sometimes it doesn't, like with Niasse. So we played chicken again on a keeper, and we couldnt get Ronnow over the line in time, once again. Sounds exactly like the last window with trying to sign a striker. Would be great if we would actually learn our lessons and address the vital signings and actually get them over the line. Yes the selling clubs can move the goalposts, yes January is a tough window, but the people running the club need to find a way to address critical signings, and it is clear that from Hodgson's multiple comments on the topic this month, a goalie was a vital signing. Good chairman and sporting directors find a way to get those areas addressed. Its hard, and the other side is tough to deal with........but they find a way. Once again we failed to address a vital signing.

Is a third goalie worth all this fuss .Very unusual for keepers to get injured, and as much as I don’t like Wayne,he isn’t doing too bad and we still have Julian .Think a proven forward was more urgent.

Lille did not screw us at all. The player, Amadou, is valued at 18 millions. So that's what they wanted. What would SP's reaction be to a similar loan deal for a Palace star, he would laugh it off, rightly. But you can't have it both ways SP. I believe we offered that. We had a binding agreement to make full payment in the summer, with a downpayment via the loans system of £2m so it's reported. I also believe Lille would have been happy to take that had they been more on the ball regarding bringing back a loanee to cover Amadou's position.

You make a good case apart from the keeper. We could've sorted that out earlier. No excuses there. It was possible and probably not going to cost much more from abroad or just a loan. I tend to disagree re the keeper. We did everything reasonable to get Guaita & it was Getafe that put up a wall. Once it had been reported in Spain that we had a deal for him to join us on a free when his contract expires they changed their tune & tried to get a replacement in. They failed to do this (the replacement they found won't be joining until next season) so said a final 'no' to the deal. Hopefully their loss & our gain in the medium term - assuming there is an agreement & he does actually join us. Plan B was Ronnow & that was simply too late for Brondby to get someone in for which you can lay blame with Parish/Dougie but it is probably fair to say they were operating within a budget & FFP constraints & confident the Amadou situation would've been resolved. Hindsight's a wonderful thing, let's just hope WH starts performing better with a decent back four in front of him like he has in the past, although that relies on Sakho & Tomkins staying fit for the rest of the season...
Will this be five? It's gonna be five! It IS five! |

My thoughts keep comming back to Roy’s evaluation of the squad being that he is very happy with his first choice eleven but feels that our backup needs strengthening.

This is all fair comment however if this was your own money and someone said you could possibly save £3m or £4m by delaying a transfer 4 months would you do it? I know I would. Yes, we need a keeper, but is that going to be the difference between us staying up and going down this season, I don't think so. Please don't say that sort of money is small beer, because it is not.

Do we actually have an agreement with him to sign him in the summer when his existing contract has expired as we could end up losing him to someone else when he becomes a free agent

One thing I make a point of doing is listening to all our manger's press conferences. That got a bit tiring with Pards I can tell you. Hodgson has said many, many times this month (more than any other points he made re transfers) that we really, really needed to sign a third goalie. So to address one of the main concerns of our manager, who has worked miracles with what he has had, and is in the midst of the worst injury crisis he has ever seen (albeit not so much with keepers) I would definitely fork out 4 million quid, yes. A lot of folks on here are making the point that "is the third keeper really so important?". Well, yes, because our manager made it very, very clear that it was. Parish and co have failed to address our manager's needs and concerns regarding the goalkeeper situation. Given that this is now 2 windows in a row, and everyone can see that Hennessey is not the answer AND a premier league team should have 3 front line keepers, that is just not good enough.

Cech makes some individual errors now and then, as do all keepers. However he has had a long and illustrious career as one of the world's premier shot stoppers. Comparing Cech to Hennessey is like lining up Wilbraham and Ibrahimovic: maybe they are the same height? Edited by Maine Eagle (01 Feb 2018 3.38pm)
