Yeah, but I suppose if there is an accident that would have been preventable otherwise, one would imagine that the public would blame the staff. I suspect that's half the battle lost for the unions, as they are talking about the s*** that might happen whereas passangers are dealing with the s*** that does every day. Were there fewer accidents in the days when there routinely were guards? I don't think so.....

The only losers in this absurd, luddite-inspired dispute are the travelling public. Terminate GTR's franchise and sack the strikers who, frankly, have absolutely no right to f*** people's lives up to the extent they have. I'm voting for you. That said, I am hoping for a month's compensation from my annual season ticket, which would be lovely. Me and the Mrs could go away and buy a car on that.

If the unions are genuinely striking over safety issues, perhaps they should canvas the travelling public and ask whether we are concerned that DOO trains are compromising our safety. I'm certain that the answer will be that we are willing to risk it ( ! ) given that we are already riding on such trains on other lines. They would then have our blessing to abandon the strike, go back to work, and maybe we might have something resembling a train service restored. Saying that, I agree with Cucking - Southern should also be stripped of the franchise. Their service was totally unacceptable before these strikes began. And further to my earlier post on this, that ' one bullet ' I would now use on Grayling as well.

Incredibly unpleasant and unsafe experience for all. If the Guards, the drivers and the RMT had any balls, they would picket London Bridge and explain their actions to commuters. However, they haven't and to us it looks like they want a nice, long Christmas break and couldn't care a jot about the public. I hope driverless trains are introduced in the near future and this sort of thing is eradicated. And the drivers, the guards and the RMT will only have themselves to blame.

I was countering the accusation that they would go sick as a form unofficial strike action. Well that was how the Southern mess started if I remember right - they didn't strike in the early days, they just all had coordinated sickness (unless there was a bubonic plague epidemic across the south east which only affected train guards). Ironically, that actually weakened their case with me and a lot of the rest of the travelling public, as train after train was cancelled for the want of a guard because so many of them were 'sick', when you knew full well the driver could operate the doors (your safety concerns aside)

Rights and wrongs aside, I actually got off my @rse and contacted my MP about it last night. Now she knows I'm pissed off, I'm sure there'll be action

If they really believed this was a safety issue, they'd go on strike and not return until they were satisfied it was safe. If my car had a safety issue I wouldn't leave it for a couple of days and then go about my business as normal a few days later without rectifying it.

But the safety issue hasn't taken place yet as the guards are still in place.

No one really still believes it's about safety do they?
