Sorry if this has already been covered but if Roof is deemed to have mental health issues or worse, a history of mental health diagnosis where do his parents stand (legally) in supplying him with a handgun for his birthday?

WHAT !?

how dare you suggest his parents might be at fault, don't you know it's the fault of his teachers, the police, the black preacher, society, Obama, Cameron, the Queen, and some dog called Burnard.

Parents responsible for their children ? The very thought .

As I don't have children myself I feel it is the only logical conclusion I can come to.

Ha. Funny.

I wonder what we are really up against sometimes with race related crimes. Is it a hard wired dislike/mistrust of people who are different? Or a loathing of a particular race/cultural behavior/religion ? Is it just the perception that a certain racial group make your life less safe/pleasant/easy by their very existence ?

My money is on all of the above to some extent.

Is there any way to combat this beyond mutually approved segregation ?

I would propose a greater willingness to live together in the community rather than separately and discouraging religious and cultural behaviour (possibly flags) designed in part to separate people from other groups.

In short, we need to encourage familiarity and homogenize culture nationally. This will not stop people hating each other, since we always seem to find a reason, but it will be a step in the right direction.

Trivial fact - Palace used to win 5-1 at least once a season, maybe next season?

My suspicion is that its a learned ignorance from their parents, in which people avert blame from themselves onto others, typically less fortunate than themselves.

Biologically I think it has a basis in how we relate as humans to things, either by seeing them as similar or dissimilar. Racists invariably will see differences between cultures and people as more far more significant than similarities, non-racists likely see similarities as significant.

Social science experimentation demonstrates that you can very quickly exploit this into an increasingly hostile scenario (Blue Eyes, Brown Eyes and the Stanford Prison Experiment), even when the defining characteristics are meaningless, especially where authority to hate another group is given, or permitted by 'respected' individuals.

More or less. But there is no link between owning a gun and killing someone with it, and you'd be a liar and a communist to think otherwise....

What worries me more about Americans is the generally casual attitude towards the idea of guns and what constitutes 'responsible gun ownership', and the hysterical shrieking that is US Politics (Gun Control = No Guns is a nonsense, the US needs and has gun controls in law - Sawn off Shotguns are illegal for example, fully automatic weapons have very tight restrictions on ownership, sale and distribution).

May not be this year, but the numbers are sadly consistent so it's probably not wrong.

We don't do possession; we do defense and attack. Everything else is just wa**ing with a football.

A few things on the Internet today that sum up how messed up the World is.
The pro gun lobby one is my favorite. Unbelievable.
