It is a huge relief to put this off for a year, possibly it is just not ready.

But things are difficult enough already.

Van Leyden clearly sensitive to Britain having second thoughts.

Dream on.

I agree with you and its interesting to note the warm words spoken a number of times by Von Der Leyen in recent weeks including today at Queens University.
I suspect the issue is primarily that they feel they can at last trust a British PM and are certain that it will be either Sunak or Starmer for the foreseeable future both of whom they can do business with.
My best guess is that the traction will be economic in nature starting with some loosening of the barriers to trade created by the Johnson/Frost agreement and maybe gradually extending into membership of the single mkt.
As an aside, I can quite understand Starmer's caution re the EU before an election where his number one priority is to get elected. Beyond that however, I suspect he might well be a lot more radical than people think including in relations with the EU. He, Hunt/Sunak well recognise the economic damage being done by the nonsense so often spouted by Johnson, Frost and Truss with their absurd notions of so called sovereignty.

That's over 3 years old.

Nobody wants to emulate brexit, that's for sure.

I think you are quoting their figure for 2016-2019, after the Leave vote. When we were full members we paid around £18 billion a year gross.

Whereas I was quoting net. Gross means nothing. Average net from 2014 to 2018 was £7.8 bn.

So? It's more about the EU collapsing than anyone wanting to leave.

UK Parliament Library says it was an average of c£7.5 net 2016-1019 but £12.6 billion net in our final year of contributions in 2020. There seem to be many different figures available - whichever is exactly right, it is LOADS OF MONEY!

Sovereignty is absurd then!!

The majority who voted to leave the EU didn't think so - they wanted to live in a parliamentary democracy where they could vote for or against those that make the laws that govern them.

Your portrayal of every economic ill in the country being due to Brexit is what is absurd.

Your views on the democratic institutions of the EU are well known and have been debated many times. Let's just say we have very different perspectives.

Actually, if you read what I wrote it did not say every economic ill was due to Brexit; however, the significant impact is undeniable and of no surprise given, for example, the trade barriers that have been erected with our closest trading partner. Indeed, just look at the recent trade figures as an example.

It's guesswork to identify exactly what the economic impact of Brexit is given the effects of the pandemic, Ukraine and worldwide inflation.

Electing those that make your laws is a fundamental of democracies.

Certainly there are trade barriers - imposed by the protectionist, price-rigging, racketeering EU.
