Beyond that given the class and ability we now have in the squad - he is at that level and tell me how and why..?? Simple question just needs a simple answer..!! Don’t dance around other posters this is about my opinion and yours..!! I’ll freely admit I think Ward is way passed his best, and has been for a few seasons and that we should have replaced him in the summer - in fact should have replaced him the moment AWB left - that’s what 2 seasons ago..!! Let’s be honest - he wasn’t good enough when AWB came into the side as an unproven youngster - now all of a sudden what 4 seasons later and 4 years older in a much better squad he’s at that/this level - do me a favour..!! But football is all about opinion and this site is about reasoned debate so from that perspective within reason everyone’s point of view is valid..!! I’ll leave it with I’ll guarantee if Ward remains in situ (which he won’t) he’ll cost us far more than he will benefit us and will become a liability - if he isn’t that already..!! COYP

Back home after my most enjoyable trip to Selhurst in a long time (and I am a ST holder). It was great to see how we competed, pressed, hustled etc. and stopped Spurs playing their game, by playing ours. I thought Vieira did well to start with the players he did, and leave the 3 newbies on the bench. After a tricky first 15-20 minutes the team grew in stature and began to dictate the play. Yes the sending off helped, but frankly we were clearly the better team before that point. Others have spoken of the excellence of Gallagher, Zaha, Edouard and Mitchell. I want to add the name Andersen. His range of passing and its accuracy was impressive as was his coolness on the ball. In fact it's probably a little unfair to pick out individuals because above all, this was a team performance and that is what for me was most satisfying. We weren't relying on just one player to perform. Defensively, we were solid and on the few occasions Spurs threatened to get into our penalty area, the team as a whole defended to a man. Of course, just as one swallow doesn't make a summer, one performance doesn't make a season. What the performance does do (for me at least) is give confidence that our squad will be good enough to play the PV style and keep us out of relegation trouble. I think we can look forward to seeing more good football played by our team.

Funny how Vieira said that Benteke played fantastically for the first 70mins, still what does he know about the players or the club compared to you? Edited by Orange1290 (11 Sep 2021 7.04pm) He didn't play fantastically at all, Viera is just trying to keep his confidence up, his movement was awful as usual

Exactly, I don"t know why more of our fans don"t go in to top football management, instead of leaving it to ex players who only won a world cup or two, all the cups going domestically, and played for the biggest clubs! You can see most weeks what Lineker and Shearer think of him, and i think they know a bit about strikers

Agree with doombear, Andersen was my MOTM to be honest. I thought he defended very well, for the most part, and sent an endless stream of balls up to Zaha that were again mostly very accurate. He also seems to be happy on the ball, confident enough to take it up a bit and then find the right pass. We have been dying for players like this for so long. It was so obvious how Wilf kind of woke up in this game, like he realized that actually he has the people around him to help him enjoy his football. He would now be a fool to leave, with all the new signings, the dynamism in midfield, and Eze coming back eventually! And Edouard to pass to - finally a striker who seems somewhat mobile!?! Lots of chatter on here about Joel. He has been a terrific defender for us but he did make a few mistakes going forward today. You look at the other three in the back - Anderson, Guehi and Mitchell - and I suppose the writing is on the wall for Ward. But to be fair - I think most of the attacks were going up the left not just because of Ward's possible defects, but also (1) Anderson seems to like pinging it up to the left and (2) Ayew wasn't having a great game up on the top right either. He can blow so hot and cold and of course he hates passing, which drives me nuts. But come on. THREE NIL. Happy days.

Very surprising to see the number of empty seats in the Main Stand and the Whitehorse Lane end today??? I didn’t see that amount of empty seats at the Brentford game. I understand we haven’t sold as many season tickets this year but you’d expect those tickets to be sold for a home game against Spurs.

The energy Gallagher has brought to our midfield is unreal. I think we should blow our entire next seasons transfer budget on him, he's that good.

I am the first to agree that RHs teams were not pretty to watch but when his employers tasked him with keeping us in the PL each year with virtually no money for new players I think he did a good job with the players we had. Allowing so many contracts to run out at the same time was clearly a plan and being able to get so many good youngsters in to replace them is to be applauded. It seems clear to me that we are trying to create a wage structure that does not bankrupt us and I think is the reason why Townsend and Cahill left. Does anyone know what terms Benteke was re-signed on? When Wilf's contract expires in 2 years time I can't see him staying on his current wages especially if the young players are still performing as they have started. Olise looked good for the limited period he was on today and I am intrigued to see how good Ferguson is, if he ever plays, after 2 years without a game, he may be a total flop. Possibly without ever seeing him play many on here are still planning on him replacing Joel who was NOT a weak link today but he will need to prove that he is good enough. Lets hope that Edouards goals are not a flash in the pan, remember Matetas goal against Brighton in his third game... RVs players are very different to RHs so it is unfair to compare them or their styles, you must play a team according to their qualities.

Wilf said after the game that he knows the goals will come now that we have stopped just hoofing the ball and playing counter attacking football. Make no mistake, we have an exciting football team.
