He came from a Greek family and was born there but it's well known he isn't fond of Greece. He's British. Edited by Stirlingsays (08 Jul 2015 7.18pm)

The danger here is sort of similar during the Great Depression in Germany. Their economy was completely wrecked and their money was worthless. These conditions helped create opportunities for fringe groups to rise and the end result was the Nazi Party taking over. There needs to be more reflection on just what is going on and less on whose money is whom's. Germany should certainly know better but the rest of Europe needs to take a breath. One thing I know, the euro/EMU must be re-defined in terms of that pesky little concept known as alignment or integration of economies. There was a rush after Maastricht in 1992 and now the haste of those five years is coming back to bite everyone in the touchis.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money. |

He came from a Greek family and was born there but it's well known he isn't fond of Greece. He's British. Edited by Stirlingsays (08 Jul 2015 7.18pm) He is indeed a naturalised British citizen and has lived here for about nearly 80 years. His Greek roots don't go back too far. He is a member of the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg. The "family link" to Greece goes back to 1863 when the distinctly not Greek, Wilhelm, became King of the Hellenes (with British support). Liz is also a member of the same House through her great grandmother.

Taking all the infrastructure the Germans destroyed, the loans the Greek central bank was forced to make to Berlin, the outright theft of gold reserves, to the systematic removal of crops and livestock, I'd say Greece was a teeny weeny bit of a creditor, wouldn't you?
Edited by chris123 (08 Jul 2015 9.49am) .................................................... According to the BBC, German "massacres" in Greece in WW2 included one where 218 civilians were killed in Distomo in 1944. In 2000, the Greek Supreme Court ruled Germany should pay €28m to the relatives of those killed, although the decision was not enforced, and the dispute effectively reached stalemate in international courts in the following years. Maybe the German government could pay that one now for a start. If ever a debt (even in the non legal sense) remained due from the "moral giants" heading up the economic powerhouse of the EU......or is it only bank debts that count for anything with such "moral giants"?
