Townsend should be on the bench. He took almost all the set pieces. Looked like Eze deferred to him when he is much better at free kicks and corners. In the absence of Zaha he was given the ball out wide and couldn’t hit a half decent cross.

Bats is only good enough for the bench too. We have at least learned that we should keep our cash in the summer and let him go backt to Chelski.

Despite his shortcomings we looked more likely when Benteke came on. He should be up front until we find someone better.

We need to build our team round Eze and Banks

I would like a scenario whereby we send Batshuayi back to Chelsea in January and replace him with Giroud for the rest of the season.

There is a simple pattern to Palace play.

1) if the opposition attack consistently we soak it up and can do them on the break. I would say we win our fair percentage of these games.
2) the opposition score first and shut up shop. We are fooked. We win very few of these games.

Go and watch him (Batshuayi) play for Belgium.... tactics and fed by better players, not working for scraps
Tonight after a few offside goals, I believe Batshuayi was holding back..

Surely that’s it for Townsend now. Yet another dreadful display from a player who gets an easier ride than anyone I have ever known. Eze was excellent and it was a really good display from Clyne, but so many of the usual 7/10 merchants had a stinker. We must play Sakho in games like this to get passing moves going. Jimmy Mac was poor, the CBs were off their game and Ayew’s inconsistency is becoming a problem. As for the myth Batshuayi, I just don’t know how he has such a big reputation. But hopefully we will have Wilf back and will make no mistake on Friday against a side every bit as bad as Burnley.

Burnley were aware that if we got the ball out wide and delivered crosses they could handle them with ease.

We were pedestrian - we needed to move the ball quicker to pull their defenders out of position.

We looked awful in defence and many players let themselves down with inept performances.

I am not convinced that McArthur can play in a 2 man midfield. He is more suited to playing in a '3'.

Eze is far more suited to playing centrally than out wide.

Finally we had much more of the ball in the second half but generally never looked like scoring.

We don't do crosses this is the problem we like to slow things down and keep trying to go through packed middle.

This is simple Roy got the tactics all wrong his style works against bigger teams or teams that attack but when it comes to these lower ones it's useless it's a clear pattern to see.

I agree Eze is wasted trying to play him as the old Wilf once did.

This game you could see it clearly crying out for Benteke from the start and quick balls forward and crosses but no get the same old slow keep passing backwards.

His goals for Belgium, the No 1 rated team,in recent seasons have been against the likes of Cyprus,Iceland,San Marino, Kazakhstan and Switzerland.
Hardly world beaters!

When teams deploy a low block we don't have the guile in midfield to find spaces centrally, and we don't have the strikers to get on the end of crosses.

We deploy Townsend on the right who cuts back on to his left foot and goes inside into a crowded area we don't have that attacking right-back who could whip the ball in with his right foot and perhaps drag defenders out as he marauds out wide.

The spine of the team didn’t function today.
Kouyate and Dann looked uncharacteristically shaky, particularly in the first 20 minutes.
Mcarthur and Riedewald failed to impose themselves at all in midfield.
Ayew and Batshuayi played like a couple of strangers up front.
On the plus side Eze played well and Clyne and PVA were ok.
I’d take Wood over Ayew, Benteke or Batshuayi as a striker option.
He’s physical, mobile, good in the air and is a reliable goalscorer.
It will be interesting to see the selection on Friday .

I had more excitement tonight watching my water tap running.

tactics- clueless, no purpose apart from trying to tread a needle. Can Roy survive?

Kouyate - IVE said it before hes a stop gap and with defenders better on the bench why is he on! he ball watches, he has no defenders "header", out muscled and he is so sloppy with passing, hit and hope.

Townsends should have come off when Schlupp came on- dreadful and out of form again.

When are going to pay a creative midfielder!!

This is our Palace, we sadly still at that level. Stop dreaming this is a survival season...

Has generally been one of the plus points this season. Despite CK's mistakes Dann looked just as wobbly if not worse this evening IMO.

A 2 man midfield of McArthur and Riedewald does not work. They are better playing in a '3'.
A lone target man in the mould of Wood would be more suited to us.

Yes, sorry you are right. Everyone saying brilliant save but it looks like Benteke miraculously managed to find his outstretched arm even though the keeper wasn’t looking!

It looked like Benteke was shoved out of the way but managed to force himself back in to get his foot to the ball. Possibly a decent attempt foiled by good goalkeeping?

To be fair there has been more than enough $hit football played this weekend. These regular and absurd international breaks really spoil the continuity of the league.

Townsend and Batshuayi absolute pants tonight. Ayew little better.

Scott Banks and Rob Street should be given a go - couldn't do any worse.

We should also get Flynn Downes in during the January window. Fraid there is not much left in Jimmy Macs legs these days.

Would also like to see 2 of Sakho, Cahill and Tomkins paired as CB with Kouyate holding.
