Odd results this weekend. I am prepared to put this down to an aberration; something in the air. Hope we come back better with a couple of injury returns and no crocks from international break

First off, Chelsea deserved their win... So we concede 4 goals in the last 30 minutes, I think we just switched off, Sakho has always been an accident waiting to happen, so that was the first and from then on we were chasing the game. It wasn’t great, but we have had 4 tough games so far and we have an injury list to defenders the length of your arm. We sit middle of the table and I am happy with that, we could have even had 7 points if it wasn’t for the dodgy penalty against Everton.... Very correct, but if we had continued to defend as we had until the mistakes appeared Chelsea quite possibly might not have scored without our help.

Just look at the fouls on the BBC live text, they basically stopped us attacking.... 5' Jordinho on Sakho, 10' Azpilicuerta on Eze, 11' Jordinho on Ayew, 23' Havertz on Zaha, 23' Azpilicueta on Eze, 37' Hudson-odoi on Eze, 47' Silva on Zaha, 61' Havertz on Eze, 64' Azpilicueta on Eze, 69' Jorginho on Milivojevic, 70' Kante on Ayew, 70' Abraham on Townsend ....by this stage of the game it was well and truly over for us, the thing to remember is we are only going to score when defences are being stretched and when freekicks are awarded to us the opposition is able to organise themselves accordingly, Chelsea just did a brilliant job on us with their professional fouling until we eventually made a mistake then go for the kill with more mistakes. Eleven fouls on our players moving through midfield who were quite obviously trying to move forwards should not just be waved away, Chelsea were always going to have more of the ball because they can just practically buy who they want to achieve that, poor old palace haven't that luxury. Edited by Tickled pink (04 Oct 2020 8.21pm) We lost 4-0 that says it all completely outclassed on the day, 29% possession, 4 shots, zero on target, corners 5 & fouls 13 (Chelsea 17), so Chelsea committed 4 more fouls than us hardly an excuse for losing the match. Average player ratings Chelsea 6.72 & CP 4.56 (Source BBC Sport).

dont understand this lack of ambition from some palace fans. Roy gets an easy pass but he is a below average manager who gets lucky every so often or rides on a herculean contribution from Zaha/Schlupp. Game has evolved beyond him. Im not a Leeds fan but look at what Bielsa is doing with an average squad there. IMHO for palace to progress, Roy who has saved us has to go. Over to you
Until we reach the Eldorado of a higher status like Chelsea, we will always be looking to average a point a game and stay up. Edited by Hrolf The Ganger (04 Oct 2020 11.31am)

Ok the previous, previous manager. That was Big Sam, Fans complained about his boring football and he left because the board were not prepared to invest in the team and before that it was Pardew and if he had stayed we would at best be in the championship by now!

Pardew was extremely entertaining, he was basically the opposite of big Sam, Mr Hodgson is roughly halfway and where he should be in order to achieve success on the pitch with the players and funds he has available, if fans want to forget the enjoyable games we've had under Mr Hodgson and just concentrate on the not so then that's up to them but they mustn't keep on and on about the games where we didn't beat Chelsea fifteen nil.

If we had fouled as often as they did then our count should be about 50 fouls (and based on that probably down to 8 players!). We need to move the ball quicker if we want to avoid the professional fouls stopping our game. Edited by rollercoaster (05 Oct 2020 10.42am)

I'm hoping Saturday was a one off after a largely improved start to the season. Last season Roy kept us up comfortably with an average squad. I do think Eze and Bats will improve us and once Cahill, PvA and Tomkins get back to fitness we will also be more solid at the back (PvA is a key part of our attacking threat which Mitchell has not yet been able to replicate). I do think we should have taken more risks at Chelsea as they clearly lacked confidence until their first goal went in, but there you go. Personally I want to see Riedewald in the middle as I genuinely think he would significantly improve our midfield. Preseason he was the best player on the pitch and was really unlucky to pick up an injury just before the season kicked off. He looks far more assured on the ball than 12 months ago and has the build to compete physically. McArthur and McCarthy are like two little terriers, but their passing is not anywhere near the same standard as Jairo's and they often give the ball away too easily. I think it has to be one or the other. Up top Ayew has struggled to replicate last season's form and I think Bats should be given a chance to try and win a starting place. Ayew and Wilf are perhaps too similar in that they are basically converted wingers. 90% of the time Chelsea are going to beat us however well we play, so I'm not going to overreact, but I just hope with Eze and Bats Roy finds a way to bring some entertainment back into our game as it was sorely missing last season.

They committed 17 fouls which was 4 more than us, that tells me they kept us away from the ball. We were poor on the day, there is no other words for it but perhaps not quite as bad as Man U and Liverpool were yesterday, thats football or did Spurs and Villa cheat as well?

It was down to Plan A (the only plan) and that was to get a 0-0 draw - and we got our come-uppance. Whereas against Man Utd we went out to win, and with a little but of luck, we did. Sure, Chelsea are a better team than United but that was no excuse for playing like we did and, please, don't blame the oppositions 'rough tactics' - we were simply tactically and effectively terrible. There is hope - that Fulham, Burnley, Sheff Utd continue their own abysmal starts. But considering the topsy-turvy results so far then absolutely nothing can be taken for granted. Our next two games should be very enlightening ....
