On this thread I have read that Christian is a member of the Palace Team and his being on the pitch helps. Football is a team game and getting goals is often associated with opposing players being in the wrong place. I saw Burnley setting three to watch and two to watch Christian. This gives other Palace players opportunities. COYP

I support every palace player, providing they give 100%. Sadly I don't feel he is. Nothing would please me more than him getting a hatrick against arsenal and going on a good run of goals, but I just can't see it happening. What would make you feel he is giving 100% ?

No, statistics are facts. That he's a class player is just your opinion in the past benteke was a class player. Just like in the past Maradona was a force to be reckoned with. Whether Benteke gets back his form or ends up playing in the Championship will be determined over the next few weeks. By the Ides of March he will either be a hero or a zero.

There is a pattern here..... Rogers bought Benteke for Liverpool on the basis of what he was like at Aston Villa which, was a beast of a player, powerful going forward and goals with both feet and head. Virtually unplayable at times. Failed to find anywhere near this form with the scousers and when Klopp came in gave him a chance but got rid to us for the same fee as they paid, so nothing lost. We bought him based again on the same thing Liverpool did.... His stunning form at Villa. The thinking of both clubs being 'hope'. Neither us or Liverpool paid over £30m and with wages of £120k for him to do the occasional great flick or pass. He was wanted to score goals and lots of them. I keep reading many posts in his defence ...... His 15 goals last season/he clearly has little confidence and once he gets one he will go on a scoring spree/the flick against Burnley etc etc. If a player is short on confidence then I would expect him to knuckle down to the hardest work possible on the training pitch and graft with the results on display on the pitch. All great goal scorers did it.... Wright and Bright, Rush (look at the way he used to close down defenders creating opportunities). In short they and others used to work hard at their game. I have closely watched CB over the past 6 games and I have not seen any such effort, determination or focus. Instead I have watched a player being a shadow of his former Aston Villa self. Others have pointed to his lack of movement and a footballing brain so I am not going to go into that detail here. Ian Wright on MOTD repeatedly picked out his weaknesses against Burnley, namely his positioning and inability to attack the ball in the air. Yesterday he could and should have got two maybe three goals, that's what we paid the big bucks for and he has been given every chance to prove himself but as I have said previously he is like driving a car with the hand brake on. There is no desire in his actions or eyes unlike Sako who looks hungary and scares defenders. For that matter what about Kelly's incredible chase and slide tackle at the end if the first half. I fear that we will never see the Benteke of old, he was hungary but has now been well and truly fed to the point where his thinking is why should I really put myself out when I have untold riches with no one competing for my place and a contract that protects me with another possible big pay day coming up, if sold. Can you imagine what we would be like with a dynamic big centre forward who terrorises the centre halves and bangs in his fair share of chances? Saying all this I would dearly love to see CB release the hand brake but fear this just too much to hope...there we go again!

Look at the front 3 that Klopp played against City and has selected all season, there is no traditional centre forward of Benteke’s type. He was never likely to be in Klopp’s plans due to the formation and style of football that Klopp played hence why he was available to us. To say he was therefore given a fair chance under Klopp is simply incorrect.

Agreed. He really didn't do too badly there. Only 14 starts in League and nabbed 9 goals. Only Firmino with 10 bettered him that season

Still, statistics are facts. Defined as: "a fact or piece of data obtained from a study of a large quantity of numerical data." So, not necessarily a fact nor do they necessarily paint the entire picture. Football is so fundamentally subjective that any statistics produced will be flawed. The variables are so great that it is impossible to state many of them are indeed 'fact'. The 'fact' is we're a better team with Benteke playing as demonstrated by the win/lose/draw stats and there (here comes the subjective) appears to be much less criticism of the team's performance compared with when he's been absent. IMHO. he's been better of late but his confidence is shot - it was before the penalty incident & that has only made it worse. Maybe, just maybe, having Sako up alongside him will give him what he needs to get back to form? All I know is that Roy and the staff are far more qualified than any of us to judge what is best for the team. Fact.
Will this be five? It's gonna be five! It IS five! |
