The problem he had at Palace was that both himself and the another poor excuse for a manager, Alan Smith, thought he was a midfielder. Whilst he got away with it in Chamoionship, at the top level he was so poor. Following at move to Villa, he was rightly put back in defence and same when he went to Middlesborough. As for being a manager, let's face it, got the Enhland job in fortunate circumstances. Made the semi finals of the WC off the back off of an easier route. When up against quality opposition, lost all 3 matches (Belgium twice and Croatia). Suffered like most England managers against home nations. Fail to realise that they will raise their game by 50-100% against us, and we dont raise our game accordingly. Will go out in the last 16. Trouble is, FA will stick with him.

Germany or Spain in the last 16 - all over for England after next weekend. Southgate sets up with 2 holding midfielders sitting in front of the centre backs, essentially 4 central defenders, whether we are playing Scotland or France. Just like Hodgson sets up for Man City or WBA with the same formation. Grealish on the bench, brings him on, takes Foden off, when England needs a goal. No plan B,just like Roy Trippier playing out of position at left back. Just like Roy. Same approach as the Hodgesaurus. Happy not to lose, very happy to nick a scrappy goal and win 1-0. Wastes the talent available to him. Southgate ideally suited for management at the club he captained. No compensation fee, and comes across well at interview. Sadly, just a bit pants. Trust me, this has got Palace written all over it. I'd think the use of two holding midfielders against better teams is the way to go and were we went wrong in the World Cup again Croatia and Belgium. It's the wrong approach against the likes of Scotland, but he's got to pull a team together from scratch and has to get them all familiar with the same system in a very short space of time. Best to pick a style and stick with it rather than tinkering with it all the time. 4 points against the world cup finalist and your biggest rivals from two games in extreme weather conditions isn't a bad return.

England will reach the last 4 Southgate was a great player for us and he will not be our manager. Not sure if there are any other inaccuracies in OP.

If England get to Semis that will be seen as a successful, virtually garaunteed of being in KO stages. Won first group stage in major competition Same people criticising would be doing cartwheels if available after the tournament I reckon. Not saying England will win it. Finishing 2nd is a favourable outcome in Group D so a draw v Czechs FFS!

To Southgate's credit he had the courage to bring the young players through and I think that earned a lot of credit for him with the squad. But giving the youth their chance only takes you so far. Those players are now established so Southgate tactics are rightly being questioned (possibly even by the players). I think his legacy will be more about establishing the conveyor belt from U21 football that actual success. Edited by Badger11 (20 Jun 2021 7.41am) So did Roy, at both Palace and England. But caricatures of him means he never got the credit for it.

Southgate has a plethora of quality attacking options available to him and should be playing to England's strengths (i.e. attacking). We have the type of squad which should be winning games 4-2 rather than 1-0. Whenever we have come up against quality opposition, he has been found wanting. He's done a great job of building moral and getting the feel good factor back to the national team and getting the media on their side, but truthfully he doesn't have the tactical naus to manage in the Premier League. As others have said, he's not fit to tie Roy's bootlaces when it comes to management.
