No me neither and on the whole I actually find it positive that young players want to seek other opportunities in order to increase their chances of actually playing... just gutting when it's one of ours. Yet were happy to have CW/Batts on the bench who have no future at the club .. so much for forward thinking.. they are just blocking places and bring zero to the table except a drain on wages. Zero point in building a great academy and your young talent leaving as there is no progress into Roy’s old boys club.

Surely the issue is that English clubs are more concerned in buying from abroad, at inflated prices, rather than nurture our own.

Apparently he is worried he may not be able to break into the first team quickly under dinosaur Hodgson. I'm sick and tired of the Roy in brigade. Lets have another couple of years with snooze fest Roy ball, not bringing any youngsters through, but hey ho why not give another contract to that crock Wickham!!! who won't play for another two years!!! I tell you something, if Hodgson gets another year, i'm done with football until he retires. TTFN

I have seen him play, looks a very exciting prospect. Looks like an exodus of players to West Germany recently, lots of deutschemarks and EU benefits. Good luck to him. We have, in Mateta, a player who has done the reverse! And even better luck to him, too. West Germany....deutschmarks... I wonder if that pesky Berlin wall will be coming down any time soon?

Very few players make their premier league debut at the age of 18. 23 is the average. It’s not a Palace problem it’s a premier league problem.

Can I just point out before we start on the Hodgson wont play youth thread again how well the 4 players out on loan are doing, the ones dinosaur Hodgson won’t play. Kirby started two matches at Tranmere and seems to have been taken off at half time in both, similar with Pierick who is been kept out of the Kilmarnock first team by the talent of Kyle Lafferty. Sam Woods has been a sub for Plymouth and Scott Banks seems to be doing ok in the Scottish championship . Hopefully ,they are all learning from the experience hopefully they will all come good but let’s not kid ourself these are premier league ready players. We have only just got the top grade academy and the young players are simple not there to play but hopefully they will come through over the next few years.

So what is the point of paying loads of money out to create an academy if it is unlikely any of the players will ever play for us?

Why not read the article properly if you want to have a rant as it says quite clearly that "The youngster harbours concerns about what opportunities lie ahead at Palace with competition particularly fierce in the wing and attacking midfield positions." Why not blame Parish as it was him that bought Eze who is probably the one blocking his path to the first team With Zaha playing as a striker now and Townsend getting on, there is only Eze which is hardly ‘fierce’ competition seeing as there are two wings. No idea who are our attacking midfielders are. The article is a worry if this is how he feels. I’m sure he’s not the only one. Now is the perfect time to try out a youngster or two. If they’re not ready, it will be a good experience and help their development. It at least shows the others that it’s possible to get to the first team and will keep them motivated. We know from previous seasons that Roy will stick with his usual lineup. Apart from about £2m in prize money which really is small fry, it makes no difference if we finish 9th or 15th. Blooding youngsters is a better long term investment.

He sounds like he is acting like a spoilt brat!

Because it is not going to happen to every youth player, some will make the choice that their development is best served by going somewhere they are more likely to get first team experience, gutting for us but their decision. Going to Germany seems popular at the moment but not every player is going that way. To be honest if you are an up and coming star at Millwall or Charlton academy and you get an offer at the Cat 1 Palace you are likely to take it , but rising starlet seek future in Beckenham isn’t going to make a great story except for the South London Press, we will nick players as well and the cat 1 academy makes us more attractive.

The gulf between reserves and first team, is enormous there is no guarantee that this lad will make it. We pinched the lad from Chelsea so he has no loyalty to us and will do what he thinks is best for himself. Some clubs have dropped their academies as they don't think they are worth it. Another poster (maybe different thread) has pointed out that our players currently on loan are not distinguishing themselves (yet) in the lower leagues. A while ago I posted an article about the youngest players to debut for each PL club. From memory most of them either flopped or had careers at lower league clubs so it's not a Palace problem as such. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and accept that you will lose players just like PVA who will walk out on us at the end of the season. Edited by Badger11 (17 Mar 2021 7.49am)
