No problem with that opinion Tom, I just see it a bit differently. I know this is taking it to extremes but when you get a match day experience like Wembley, Twickenham or Spurs where you can get a drink, get some decent grub and sit in a seat that isn’t half the size it should be or have a steel girder blocking part of your view, then the attraction of a sporting venue goes up massively. You also need to price it correctly for families so that a whole family can go out for the day and ideally still get a bit of change out of £100. IMO if we had a new out of town ground with decent facilities including parking and a train station nearby people would flock there. I admit there is a certain nostalgia walking the back streets around Selhurst to get to the ground and it does add to the old school feel of going to football, but that is where the match day experience ends for me at SP, unless I fork out big style for some corporate entertainment and believe me, that doesn’t come cheap. The reason I think we could easily fill a 40,000 stadium is because we have a very large catchment area and there are plenty of potential Palace converts out there. Football should be an enjoyable day out, not a struggle to get there, a struggle to get food and drink and an even worse struggle to get home. My dream of a Brighton style town fringe stadium will probably never come true, so I hope our next best thing of a new stand at SP actually comes to fruition in my lifetime. I do feel for the regulars in the Arthur though, it can’t be great in there (never had that experience) and that ain’t likely to change for a long long time. I take your point brother re getting there, food, drink and taking a p@ss etc. Shocking tbh. That said, I couldn’t personally think of anything worse than an identikit, soulless out of town stadium, regardless of its size etc. Selhurst may be a sh@thole, but it’s our sh@thole, it’s the ground my grandad used to take me to and the ground I take my kids to. Sorry, going off on an emotional tangent Edited by Tom-the-eagle (05 Mar 2021 4.22pm)

I went in to it when I was four or five on my uncles shoulders, and he then sat me on the fence as it was. I don’t hardly remember much about it I think it was Against Newport or Watford as there was definitely Gold, Yellow, shirts involved don’t know the score I think we lost. No matter what else I ever did in football, or out , I was hooked for Palace and Selhurst Park. Lose that attachment and you get one step further towards it being more entertainment than a passion.

People who were born into the club will always have an emotional link with Selhurst. Even the new stand won't help folk in the Arthur. I've not been in there for many a year now, but it wasn't pretty then. I used to watch the motor racing up the hill on the site of the original Crystal Palace. Surely most supporters, even those who were born into Selhurst would welcome a modern stadium up there. Lots of space. Pity it doesn't seem possible.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

For better or worse, football is moving on and it is becoming more of an all round entertainment business, hence why we see things like the fan zone outside. I think most on here are of the age where nostalgia plays a big part. I suppose what you have to do is take yourself out of that mindset and imagine what it is like for the new fans and how the future is going to be shaped for them. I will say though that I think the most iconic thing in football is when you go to your first night game, walk up the steps and get your first view of the pitch. It sticks in your mind forever.

I'd love to know the demographics of 'local' supporters v ex-pats, like myself.
This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise. |

I think our International appeal, and apparently it's huge, has a lot to do with the club's name. Crystal Palace has a kind of glamorous ring to it that say Leeds, doesn't have to folk on the other side of the world. The name attracts attention. There's a Crystal Palace hotel in Tombstone Arizona. Not a lot of people know that. There is a 'Crystal Palace Hotel' in Sydney.

It’s where I grew up, it’s where I love!

There are a surprising number of our supporters in my 'neck of the woods' on the south coast. I know of two public houses, not too far removed from my abode where the Management or owners are Palace supporters. I heard a conversation on the beach the other day between supporters and only today witnessed a young chap entering a local store with a club mask. I am informed that the local train station was awash with our supporters waiting for the train on the night of Julian Speroni's testimonial. I personally know a few supporters who are resident probably within 2 miles of 'Chez Willo'. Edited by Willo (05 Mar 2021 11.49pm)

You are all forgetting covid. That has and will continue to change everything. I was a season ticket holder in the Arthur until we got banned. Haven’t been since. We will be lucky if we get 10k capacity moving forwards maybe 5k. Like going to a friendly and I’ve done loads with 5k most in the homesdale lower. Don’t suppose I will get to go again like many of us actually go.

By the way, to answer the poster questioning the Arthur. I’ve bee literally everywhere in Selhurst right back to when the Arthur was all terracing. The Arthur is the worst stand. It’s dark in there cramped. Crap food and never have what you want, but it is real old school with real old school singing fans. We easily out sing the Ultras when we get going. I’d be happy to go back but only if they let us fill it. Which ain’t gonna happen. I’m very lucky to have been all round. Loved the Homesdale when it was terracing. That’s where I went then Edited by dreamwaverider (06 Mar 2021 1.01am)
