So, you're saying if we finish 15th or higher that is a reasonable season, fair enough. There is usually a congested mid table so the difference between 15th and say 12th could easily be 1 pt and one extra goal conceded. Why do you call those who aren't on the Roy Out bandwagon zealots? The facts are clear in terms of results and points, enjoyment of performance is a personal thing. I really enjoyed the Brighton game for example. Didn't enjoy the Fulham game at all but was happy we got a clean sheet and a point from a game where we were not favourite and playing a bang in form team. Thankfully VG made a couple of good saves Originally posted by jeeagles
I've tried asking this question a few times and getting Roy's ardent supporters to lay down a benchmark of what success looks like. For me, finishing higher than Sheffield United, West Brom, and Fulham won't represent a successful season. The narrative that staying up by any means mark some kind of miracle is simply not true anymore. Trying to make it objective. We have: The 9th biggest wage bill So somewhere between 9th and 15th wouldn't be unreasonable. Given we are in our 8th year in the premiership, and our finishes have been 11th, 10th, 15th*, 14th, 11th, 12th, and 14th. (*for the cup final). I don't think would be unreasonable to claim that 14th with poor cup performance would represent a very poor season. 11th would represent a very good season. Any higher than 11th would be excellent. Roy's remaining zealots will point out that after 26 games we are 13th. However, we have 12 games left, only 3 of which are against teams in the bottom half of the table. We did manage to obtain a staggering 15 points from the teams coming up in the first half of the season. In the run in I doubt we will get more that 9 in a best case scenario. 15th or 16th is all we have to look forward to this year.

With that goes the other side of the coin, grinding out results, some dull games and some horrendous defensive errors by individuals. Basically what we have now. What I do not expect is a regular supply of exciting play week in week out. We last had that in the season when Murray was top Championship scorer, or when we were terrifying defences with Wilf down one wing and Bolasie down the other but those days have gone. It's easy to criticise the performances from an entertainment aspect but I can't see we are going to consistently have stability and entertainment without a substantial amount of cash appearing from somewhere. That's just my opinion, but it's gets a bit wearing having so much moaning and criticism based on someone not enjoying watching.
I could stomach the crap football I bit more maybe if I felt we were building something, either on the field or off it in the way of a new stand, however our squad is ageing like our main stand and we just seem to patch over cracks year after year.

I see no " Roy must stay at all costs " posts or posts that say " Roy must stay because I really like him " I do see posts that say something along the lines of "I don't like /hate Roy and he must go" The facts are clear in terms of results and points. I'm happy with where we are and what we've achieved i.e. 8 seasons in the top flight. It's not pretty at times bug hey, needs must. The club investing in a state of the art academy is huge progress so we will bear the fruits of that in the coming years ... so another reason to be cheerful. We need to cultivate local talent to survive in the future ... Only thing missing for me, is a definitive plan / start date for the new main stand but I'm sure we'll see something on that in coming years ... as long as we stay up! If you'd of offered the above to any Palace fan 10-15 years ago they'd of ripped your arm off ... yet, some conveniently forget where we came from as they've been blinded by the Premiership lights ...

Clyne and Mitchell will be back in action within a couple of weeks but the really good news is that Ferguson is actually able to walk now.

Great. Another thread whereby we either do exactly what we’re doing or play expansive football and get relegated. Give it 1-2 pages and it’ll be relegation to the 3rd or 4th tier and then probably the conference.

What entertains me, a flash of brilliance... a youth player holding his own... players fighting for the badge... If I get that and we win... brilliant, well deserved. If I get that and we draw... good effort, better luck next time... If I get that and we lose... at least we tried, on to the next...

No, just footballers who can pass the ball to each other and not taking so long to do it that they're stretching themselves beyond the capabilities they have to achieve the pass and in doing so encouraging the opposition to come at them, that's all we all want to see ..the ability and confidence is just not quite their with too many of our knackered players, Eze shows beautifully what we can achieve and I believe we will eventually that's our next step ..remove all the old wood and the urgency we so dreadfully miss at the moment will be improved considerably.

He is of course reasonably pleased with the results we've had but to say he's happy with the performances is too far in all honesty, I'm pretty sure he's as pissed off as we are with the aged squad the injuries the horrendous mistakes and the inability of our defenders to do the simple things as is the same with everyone else, under this manager we've had some of these games you mention where we get stuck in and play well but it's just highlighted at the moment squads like ours are suffering with everything that's happening at this given time, I think we can only improve on the pitch and off it.
