It's a good question Aero. Zaha and now Eze aren't ones to stick an early ball in, which as others have said, is what a striker wants most. At the same time they are the best players we've got, and it'd be madness to shackle them to traditional wing play. I reckon the answer is to do with our full backs. If Zaha and Eze cut inside then the striker should forget about having a chance made for him, and should offer himself for a 1-2. Eze especially likes to feed the ball in to a forwards feet and follow his pass, and it's vital the striker shows for that pass, as we want our best players having the set up they need to do well. What we are missing is overlapping full backs. Partly that's personnel, partly tactics, and partly everything being channelled through Zaha anyway. If the full backs got forward more, especially into the space Eze and Zaha leave behind when they cut inside, then Mitchell and Clyne or Ward could put that early ball in and be the supply line for the striker instead of him relying on the individualistic, unpredictable but brilliant two main stars we have.

Townsend in particular is a very good crosser of the ball when he gets his head down and makes a yard rather than looking up and having the extra touch. I think he's created four goals so far this season. Brighton x 2 (ie the pen at home), Saints and Leicester. Schlupp did similar in creating Townsend's goal away to United. My biggest criticism of Roy is that he doesn't appear to encourage him to do it enough and that we're too predictable at times. My recall is that Zaha's crossing has never been that great so he's making best use of the player. The quality of defending these days is so good that it's become very difficult to beat a player on the outside.

Yes, I agree with this. When we have played 4231 with Clyne and PVA we are a lot more dangerous for that very reason. Both these players occupy the opposition full backs and we take the game to the opponents - using Zaha and Eze to do what they do best. Edited by Helmet46 (26 Feb 2021 9.25pm)
