Mitchell vs Welbeck

Townsend gave an interview after the game holding up his hands and admitting he lost his man for the goal. On the issue of full backs I think Mitchell, although promising, has not shown enough to suggest he can be first choice left back at present. If PVA departs I think we’ll need as a minimum to get a left back to provide Mitchell with proper competition. I feel part of the reason we defended better on Monday was the reintroduction of Ward. He is stronger and better in the air than Clyne and a better penalty box defender than Clyne. I sometimes feel his contribution is undervalued as he’s been around for so long.

On the issue of full backs I think Mitchell, although promising, has not shown enough to suggest he can be first choice left back at present.
If PVA departs I think we’ll need as a minimum to get a left back to provide Mitchell with proper competition.
I feel part of the reason we defended better on Monday was the reintroduction of Ward.

I sometimes feel his contribution is undervalued as he’s been around for so long.

PVA's defending and positional sense is really poor, but that overlap he does when attacking is fantastic. I was happy for Mitchell to come back in for that reason, plus Ward as i knew we needed more height with BHAs 3 centre backs at set pieces. The jury is still out on Mitchell IMHO. You want him to do well as he's a youth player and he has done ok. However, in recent games he has looked nervous and his passing has been average at best. These days the full back role should offer attacking options too, but with the exception of PVA all our full backs are unable to provide an effective overlap and/or a first time whipped in cross

Regardless of who was meant to mark who, when the opposition has 70% possession, at some point even a sold defense will crack, either by fluke, genius or error. I thought there was a deflection in the build up which put everyone on the wrong foot.

I think with better protection from midfield and/or quicker centre-backs he might look more solid. Mitchell will improve - he has a great attitude. He impresses most for me when he fights to win back the ball upfield when our attackers have lost possession, and gives the ball straight back to them. He is still a bit too raw to be first choice left back, and he will need to add more to the attacking side of his game, but he will get his head down and apply himself. We don't need a major signing at left back, just enough to provide competition as another poster said.
