On the other hand, probably the best game Patrick Van Aanholt has had in a number of weeks: no glaring errors, being caught out of position, missed lightweight tackles, or giving the ball away through poor passing. Well done Pat!

I think we can all agree, best option for Patrick... not starting him.

After watching the Mitchell horror show last night I am completely torn on who is the better player. We need a new left back.

For me Eze. This type of game is not his bag. He hardly touched the ball and when he did he went back towards our goal and miss placed so many passes. I f we are going to set up this way again we would be better off playing someone else.

Totally agree. Don’t have a problem with his effort but he’s been giving away the ball regularly over the past month or so. I’ve wanted us to sign him for the last couple of years and he’s gonna be an awesome player but I feel he has a lot to learn at this level still. Mainly when to do tricks and when is the time to play the simple pass.

It was Eze of course but this is the result of Roy playing a 433 - the formation which many Palace fans have been demanding for a while.

Not only is this formation bad for Eze as the midfield trio are expected to sit - it will also be bad for Wilf when he returns to the side as the wingers will be expected to track back.

The advantage of the Roy Hodgson 442 is that it allows Wilf to stay forward & drift freely in attacking situations. And despite the fact he is expected to hold his shape whilst we are defending, it also allows Eze to come inside behind the 2 front men when we have possession. It's the exact same role RLC played to great effect & it suits Eze.

Of course many Palace fans will scream "well just play a more attacking 433 then!", but it's really not as simple as that. This isn't a game of FIFA. Our best centre back is 35 years old & lacks the pace to play a high line. Whilst this remains the case, we have to set up with a certain level of defensive protection - whether that comes through a 442 or a 433. If we hadn't done that up until this point, we would be relegated.

If we go with the 433, for large parts of the game we will be set up as, effectively, a 451 & Eze will be playing a far more defensive role. We already saw that with Max Meyer during his time at the club.

Out of the 2 formations, under Roy, the 442 is better & suits both Wilf & Eze more.

This whole thread is just a whingefest, from the title heading onwards. What a waste of energy. We did win the game, our ninth victory of the season. Still, now you can waste some more of it whinging at me.

Lost? Playing the Roy H. way no wonder ball-players get lost. Eze and Riedewald are in fact two proper footballers not suited to our ultra-defensive set-up.

No it's not. Eze, who was just voted player of the month, had a very quiet game last night. That is concerning & it was quite clear (even before the game) he is not suited to the role he played last night.

The only whinge I've seen is from you in all honesty.

Eze just won player of the month but other than that.. yeah I guess a "Roy out" cult member is spot on as always.

Yes Eze didn't have a good game last night but what do you expect when Roy forces him to play as 1 of 3 CDMS? Madness that people think that's Eze's fault, he's been quality this season. Last night was dire, yet another embarressing performance, we didn't deserve a single point so get out of Roy's arse and wake up.

Eze and Mitchell were poor for whatever reason, but I'd vote for Luka. Didn't see him apart from apology act to avoid another yellow. I kinda like him but has been consistently poor this season.

I don’t get why people cream themselfves over Riedewald.

He was not even in the game last night ran around like a headless chicken.

Eze was terrible as well but at least you do get the feeling he can suddenly do something with an end result.

I thought we played 4-5-1 last night?

The formation isn't really the focal point for me, more the fact we were obviously intending to sit very deep. If you sit that deep the formation becomes a bit moot as you will just end up looking like two banks of bodies defending for lives as we did last night. I'm guessing that Eze was there to fulfil his defensive duties, as was every other man, but also in the hope he might get us up the pitch or play a killer pass at some point when we had a rare venture outside our own half.

Further games are a different matter but last night (despite my stance on RH) I felt it was the right call to play almost all out defence and it just didn't happen for Eze. He's in his first PL season and has had some great moments so far and most importantly we got the win last night so I'm really not that fussed by one game. Perhaps McCarthy is better suited to that type of game defensively but I don't think he holds as much potential to skip past a few players and take us up the pitch. You could argue both opinions with validity.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!
