By Christmas the grass around the penalty area and down the centre of the pitch was largely worn away on every club's ground.

Thick clogging mud was the order of the day when it rained. The Baseball Ground may have been the worst but similar conditions, if not quite so extreme, were widespread.

I can recall going to Selhurst early in the season and marvelling at the lovely green grass over the whole pitch. Then, during the winter seeing the only green bits around the corner flags.

Funny, how we used to accept it as normal, to see the ball plugged in the middle. Passing was so much more difficult. Were the players better then? Dealing with those conditions. It's certainly hard to see the likes of Harry Kane or Salah playing on anything other than a snooker table surface. Guess what I'm watching ?
