Odd to find oneself saying it, but Benteke must start. He gives us the option to go quickly from back to front, and without that option we take ages to move the ball up the pitch. We had a far higher possession percentage against Burnley and Newcastle (due as much the their tactics as anything else) but couldn't do anything with it. Just hit the big man, get the second ball.

I can see why Roy would not start with Benteke and Batshuayi, particularly if Eze and Zaha are also playing, because it would leave us potentially vulnerable in midfield against the majority of teams.

Playing on the front foot with both Bats and Benteke can potentially also drive teams back and not give them a chance to dominate the midfield. If he wants Eze to play then he would take the left side over Townsend, however with two up top both his and Zahas defensive duties will be increased. Both Zaha and Eze crossing balls in along with two strikers has to cause defensive problems for the opposition which will probably mean dragging their midfielders back and cutting off their attacking outlets. Just an idea but it would be nice to see us on the front foot from the start for a change instead of when we are 1-0 down and chasing the game.

To be able to play a more attack minded game with Benteke and Bats up front we need a stronger midfield and back four. It seems this season Hodgson is trying to play more attacking football but it’s backfiring because the two forwards are either Zaha and Ayew or as in last match a midfielder/left back moved upfront? Plus the defenders have made mistakes (namely Dann) and the midfielders have not played well / unbalanced. I just don’t think Hodgson can play any differently other than having a defensive midfield which means going back to how we have played since he took over. I just can’t see how Zaha and Eze fit in for him playing Benteke and Bats as well? It is most probable that Zaha was expected to go and Eze would then be starting with a stronger 3 alongside him. The middle two at the back needs sorting so that it’s two of Sakho, Tomkins or Cahill starting plus I think we would be stronger at left back with Mitchell. Let the midfield wide or central players supply Benteke and Bats rather than PVA losing the ball upfield and struggling to get back. Perhaps wide midfield would be stronger with one of Zaha and Eze with Schlupp on left and then the middle 2 being a choice of Luka, McCarthur, McCarthy or Reidewald?

I’d rather try 4-2-3-1 with Zaha right and Schlupp left seeing as roy has to pick schlupp and Townsnoend cuts back all the time on the wrong wing imo. If you can use your right foot then play on the left anyway. How many goals do these inverted wingers here score anyway? 2? 3? Pick 2 def mids from 5-6 to be cautious Zaha———Eze ———Schlupp ———pick 1 from 3 forwards——— Ayew backup winger or striker or 1st choice striker if it works. Townsowned benched.

I think we're missing the rock that is Luka Milivojevic.

Both Bats and Benteke got hammered after their performances against Burnley and then the same people have criticised their being left out. My recollection is that Benteke did three notable things on Friday; The header that ultimately most goalkeepers would expect to save. The shocking control which presented Newcastle with a breakaway ending with Dann (I think) being forced to give away a foul on the edge of our box. The terrible left footed shank when in a good position in the box which went nearer the corner flag than the goal. I would persevere with Bats as he's at least shown hunger for goals and looked capable of an emphatic finish. Irritating that he's had three goals chalked off but two were very close and at least the intent was there. An assist against Fulham as well. Think he's generally done ok paired with Zaha.

That's harsh. Benteke changed the dynamic when he came on. We finally had a focal point and could build attacks. He did well to beat the defender to that header and it was a great save from the keeper. Another day, that goes in. Can't recall the other moments you're talking about (but not doubting they happened). If we have other strikers banging them in, the fair enough, we can't justify CB's inclusion. But when no one's scoring, we might as well include him if we play better as a whole. Edited by sprites (30 Nov 2020 11.28pm)

It hasn't been a problem as such...but nor has it solved the lack of goalscoring issues. And while he may not have covered himself in glory in terms of scoring, we've looked a more dangerous outfit with him on the field. I'd 100% start him against WBA.

The problem is RH. He destroys players' confidence
If I agreed with you we'd both be wrong |
