100% Agree with this.

The obvious thing is that if that had been at the other end, say Sakho had done it, it wouldn't have needed VAR: It would have just been given. So there is no reason for us to fret, Man U will get over it.

I would be fracking annoyed if that had been against us. it is never a pen.

The rules quoted above do not make it clear and Ayew is pretty near when he flicks it up. I just don’t see him being in an unnatural position or moving his hand to the ball.

I've watched the incident a few times, as I'm sure many people have, and his hand definitely moves towards the ball, albeit minimal and NOT deliberate, which definitely changes the direction of the ball.. it is harsh but the rule is what it is, like it or not.. personally I don't like it but have seen many similar given against our boys and was totally p*ssed off.. some dodgy ones at ManUre too, so what goes around comes around..

If you apply the rules as they are now it's a penalty; whether that is considered fair is another matter. The same with the GK coming off the line. Personally, in their efforts to make these things clearer they've taken away the ability to interpret intention and whether it gave an advantage, but so long as they are the rules it was a penalty and the retake was legitimate. I will say that we have fallen foul to dubious penalty decisions against the big clubs in the past before the advent of VAR, so I have zero sympathy.

Supposedly Zaha, as captain, said to Ayew to take the penalty as he had won it. Does that mean we did not have a designated penalty taker going into the match? If so that seems very amateurish.

I wonder if it would have been given if there were 75,000 fans in the stadium and the referee had Fergie glaring at him. I’m guessing not.

No, also a terrible decision. I believe that luck evens itself out over the course of a season, but your response misses the point.

We're going through far too many long winded reviews which is taking the enjoyment away for the fans. I've totally stopped watching VAR football now unless its Palace. I used to watch any game.

The rules have become too penal and VAR is massively overused. You can't celebrate goals anymore because you half expect that the goal will be disallowed for a deflection off someone's shoulder 30 seconds before the goal down the other end of the pitch.

What is a 'natural body position' when you're flying out to block a shot? When I used to play football I certainly didn't do it with my arms glued to my body or behind my back.

I think Zaha said that Ayew asked him if he could take it and Zaha said yes, which infers either that Zaha, as captain, would decide who would take any pens or that Zaha was the chosen pen taker. It's possibly the latter given that Hodgson was urging Zaha to take the second attempt.

Thought the same thing, but then couldn't be bothered looking it up beyond a quick google search ( i'm not Mattteo) and found this [Link] stand out paragraph 'Most notably there was an incredible 10 year run – from December 1993 to April 2004 – when not a single penalty was scored against United in a Premier League match at Old Trafford.'

Tbh GM I think the opposite.
VAR has actually made the game better in respect of fairness. Crowds cannot now determine a decision.
Ok C19 recently but even last season prior decisions were correct in the main.
Us at wet spam with ayews goal. Black and white, no way to say he wasnt on side.
Lots at stake and now only issue is subjective decisions but how is that any different to the past.

We differ as you believe there is a big club bias, whilst I don’t.

In the past, we weren’t scrutinising every decision from every angle trying to find a reason to rule out a goal or award a penalty. I’m all for correcting a clear and obvious error but I’m against trying to find an error to rectify.

There was nothing that United defender could/should have done differently and no one even considered it could be a penalty, players included.

Happy to get that in our favour of course, but it’s not right. The new rules are baffling.
