I agree, survival is target every year. Problem we have is over spending on wage bill to survive so not sustainable. I think we are 9th or 10th highest wage bill so if that is the measure we are underperforming. This year we reached practical safety quite early, certainly after Bournemouth game and the rest is plain to see in the results. Players are in job done mode Realistically this season we are going to finish 14th on 42 points. Trying to make this as objective as possible. We've got the 9th highest wage bill, 12th highest revenue, and 15th biggest stadium, and 14th most valuable squad (£212.90m apparently, with a very limited sell on value). On that, 9th to 15th is a reasonable expectation of where we should be. Much as it pains me to say it, on that basis, Roy isn't doing a terrible job. I'll settle for below average and declining.

Thinking back to the beginning of the season I don't think many of us had much hope of surviving, let alone being safe with 10, possibly 11, games to go. We had an underwhelming transfer window, a pretty awful pre-season, a turgid but plucky 0-0 opener with Everton, and then one of our worst performances of the season away at Sheffield Utd, after which many on here were already reading the last rites for Palace as a Premier League side, me included. If back then we'd been reliably informed that we'd be on 42pts with three games to go I reckon fans, players, Hodgson and Parish would have been doing a conga up the Holmesdale Road. So no I don't think our situation is below expectations as they stood at the start of 2019/2020.

If at the end of last season, this current squad had been posted as a suggestion, it would have been unanimously below expectation. Max Meyer is the only player under the age of 27 we've signed for 2 years. The year before was only Riedewald and Sorloth. None of them play. We have 20 senior players, one of whom (Wickham) is out on loan. Within 2 years, 9 of those 20 players will be at least 32. Cahill, Guaita, Hennessey, McArthur, Tomkins, Ward, Kouyate, Sakho, Kelly. Within 3 years, you can add Milivojevic, Van Aanholt, Benteke, McCarthy. The squad is 3/4 players short anyway, and we'll receive very little money for the 13 players listed above. According to [Link] we have the 4th lowest squad value in the league. We probably need to buy 12 players in the next 2 years, and ship 7 or 8 of the above list, having completely wasted this year as a chance to get going on that. That means we now need to do big overhauls, which often end up in relegation unless you buy extremely well (which we tend not to do). To me, the state of the club vs last year is below expectation.

If we could get Sakho and Bentenke off the wage bill and bring in younger replacements from the Championship or abroad then that would be a good start. Those two alone would probably cover the wages of 4 less experienced players. If we get the young lad in from West Brom then hopefully that's the right-back situation sorted. I think if we proceed with Roy's holding three then we probably don't need any new central midfielders for next season. Whether Zaha stays or goes we need at least one new winger and then maybe, just maybe, we might finally sign a quality striker. Despite the understandable scepticism, I actually think we are on solid ground to rebuild the squad as we have no significant debt and we barely touched the 50m from Wan Bissaka. On top of that, the positive of an older squad is that it would probably make it easier for younger players to come in and find their feet, relying on the experience of those around them. The club have failed to deliver on my expectations in the transfer market this past few years, but I actually do think they have a plan, even if it isn't a particularly exciting one!

Most people think the 50M for Wan Bissaka has gone already to repay loans from " investors ". We desperately need a significant upgrade at right back. Benteke and Sakho still contracted for another year and no one else will pick up their wages so don't expect they will be off the payroll soon no significant saving unless something happens with Meyer Edited by HKOwen (15 Jul 2020 10.39am)
Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance. |

Yeah, unfortunately that £50m went on debt - predominantly paying off the transfer fees for Luka, PVA, Sakho etc.

Most likely, we're finishing with 42 points total. Given that 40 is the target to avoid relegation, 42 is not a great result. Also, a few of our wins were matches where we played terrible, and managed to steal a fluke goal to get the 3 points. If you think about it, can you name two matches all season where we outplayed the other team, won the match, and totally deserved the 3 points? Bournemouth I guess, and...? I can't think of one other. That's scary. Combine that with being the oldest team in the league, with no young impact players. And let's not forget the ownership uncertainties. Who knows if we have any cash at all available. On the whole, I'm happy we avoided relegation earlier than usual, but I am worried about next year. So yes, I'd say this year has been below expectation.

Finishing with 42 points is looking increasingly likely, which is frustrating because from the probable 8 straight defeats if we had picked up, let's say, 8 points from the potential 24 on offer we would be on 50 points. Imagine that! Roy would have a wry smile on his face and we'd be a couple of million better off.

42 points after 35 games doesn’t sound too bad.
