I would agree that he probably is. Positional sense, decision making, organisation, ability to defend the six yard box a class above what we've generally seen despite his age. A case could be made for Sakho on his best form.

I remember JC as more blood & guts defending, but Cahill has a lot more composure / class

Don’t know I loved “Gilly” - thought he was so unlucky not to have ever played for England..!! But I agree Cahill has been “one hell of a signing”..!! IMO - he is the difference between us being in the position of relative comfort as we are now to being in the relegation dog fight. I agree get Sakho fit - them two playing together, could/would be our best Centre Half pairing ever - we haven’t had that opportunity too many times this season unfortunately. So on from that what would be your best back 4 of all time? For me; AWB, Sakho, Cahill, Sansom - Sakho just nicked it ahead of ”Gilly”..!! COYP

COYP I think the depth we have in the centre back positions and quality of the goalkeeper have been the difference. Your two centre backs and GK are the three most important players in any team. If they're no good then you're as good as down. A lot of moans about the squad (with which I agree) but the strength here is the reason we've 36 points. Good management in fairness.

But that’s a partnership. Cahill got over 60 England caps. Thorn was never capped for England and Young only got 20 odd caps for Wales. I know this is subjective but personally I wouldn’t take Thorne or Young over Cahill. There is no doubt of his experience, but unfortunately we got him in the twilight of his career. He isn't the best in the current crop of CBs.

Cahill got over 60 England caps. But not with us. If we signed Rio Ferdinand but he never made the squad would you call him our best ever centre back? Could mention Alan Stephenson. He was sold for 80,000 in 1968 - a huge fee (maybe even a record) for a defender in those days

None of our centre backs in my time supporting Palace (since 196 have been as good (England class) as Cahill. Cannon was a great servant but not good enough for Scotland - Still a great Palace player, as was Gilbert, Young and Thorn but Cahill and probably Sakho are the best we have had at this level in my opinion. Sampson and Lombardo were also at this level whilst with us. Lombardo like Cahill was coming to the end of his career but class nevertheless.

Personally still think Sakho is a better football player. But Cahill a massive coup for sure.

Cahill has been superb... even in the twilight of his career you can see he oozes quality... maybe it’s rose tinted glasses but Chris Coleman for me brings back fond memories... in my opinion he was one of our first ‘ball playing’ centre backs’... He was a lump of a man and a cracking centre back who also could play a bit as well... I haven’t read the whole thread so could be wrong but I’m surprised no one has mentioned him.
Don't waste your time with jealousy. Sometimes your ahead, sometimes your behind, the race is long. But in the end it's only with yourself!! |
