think it only feels boring this year, as we have 'no teeth' up front.

I believe we do have teeth up front - yes, not as good as top 6 / 8 teams but how we play with a defensive midfield doesn’t allow us to attack. Our forwards also play in a defensive way supporting the midfield - we don’t use creativity in midfield which slows our attacking down and allows teams to easily defend against us. Meyer and Camarasa don’t get a look in as that would disturb the set up which has got us above the bottom 3. Yesterday was a good example of all Palace matches I watch with plenty of passing the ball back or sideways and making sure the defence doesn’t get broken down. Only once did I think we would score and McCarthur fell over :-(

We will never score many goals when we are playing 8 defensively out of 11. Not sure our back 4 is as good as we think, but they have 3 others playing just in front of them helping them out.
It’s a tough one as it keeps us up each year, but the goals are on the low side.
Earlier someone said that none of the 3 in the middle have scored a goal this season (apart from penalties) there can’t be another team in the league with stats like that.
I know football has changed, but our previous decent teams have been decent at the back but always nicked a few goals from midfielders, Gray, Thomas, Hughes etc.

My favourite Palace player. If we had anybody in the midfield with his attacking presence now we would be far more effective in front of goal. Fondly remember a game at White Hart Lane where everybody was expecting Gazza to shine but Geoff stole the show. A creator and brilliant captain who would push the team forward. With Bright and Wright in a formidable attack was the real link to them.

It also doesn’t help the way we play that chances don’t come anymore from set play. Our dead ball deliveries from Luka are so poor these days?

For me the big reason why we have lacked attacking spark this season in many games is that Ward, and now Kelly, are not great at getting forward and Townsend has either been out of form or unfit for much of the season. Last year AWB and PvA got forward and supported Wilf and Andros and all that was missing was a goal scorer; Batshuayi came in and Bobs your uncle we climbed the table with verve and vigour. I lay the blame for this season's performances not at Roy's door but at the club for failing to sign neither a replacement for AWB or Batshuayi. We also clearly needed a back up winger, which has blown up in our faces again.

Having three holding midfielders can actually work if it allows the fullbacks to push on and the wingers to have more freedom, but at the current time our squad deficiencies are showing through. Meyer came on yesterday and once again showed his main weakness as Shelvey held him off like he was a small boy. For all his fans I just don't see how he fits in with the way we play other than as an impact sub? I thought McCarthy added some bite and with a few more games under his belt will be a strong asset.

Some games have been awful to watch this year and just when we seem to be finding our feet again and playing slightly more attacking football this has usually tied in with Andros starting. PvA coming back yesterday made a big difference as when he was out we really were impotent.

For me, if we have to endure this in the short-term then so be it, but the club can't go into next season and expect Roy to work miracles again. I just hope we do something in January to at least ensure we have the players to keep us up this year.

I do agree to an extent with the original poster but for a club like Palace we really are achieving what we are capable of. To go to the next level playing free flowing football would cost 100’s of millions. Clearly the model for us is to emulate Leicester. That is easier said than done. But if we had a Jamie Vardy we would be challenging the top 6 even with our current squad. If we had scored another 10 goals this season we would most likely have another 10 points and be in a CL spot. Fine margins indeed.
The one thing I would love is for us to win something. An FA cup triumph would be fantastic. Trouble is with our injuries I suspect the u23,s will get a run out v Derby.
We all know that relegation would be a disaster for us financially. If we were to go this season or next apart from some decent memories there is nothing tangible to show from our extended stay in the top flight. That has to be a huge disappointment.

I agree, a cup final appearance and dare I say a win will live with us forever. Eventually we will be back in the lower division and having nothing to show for these seasons in the prem will be a missed opportunity. Especially for us old geezers as the time to see an FA cup final win gets less and less :-(

I suspect a lot go to watch matches to get some relief from the tedium of their working lives, to let off steam by having a good shout /sing and hopefully to get excited by seeing your team produce attacking football and score some goals. Under Roy that just does not happen. With the 3 midfielders he uses he is effectively playing with 7 defenders. Nothing ever changes, regardless of the opposition of the state of the game. The same subs are nearly always made (like for like) and the same predictable set-pieces are used. We have scored just 4 times in the first half of our 18 games this season and two of those were penalties. 12 of our games have been 0-0 at half-time. Sorry, but under Roy it's just so boring to watch. The annoying thing is that when he does let the players attack (normnally the last 15 mins) we actually play some decent football.

there are also no bench players that create a buzz when you see them about to come on.
Before wrighty was established, when he came on, the crowd would lift, Christ even bloody Finnegan or butter foot bruce dyer coming on was better than now!
Wish roy would give a few younger lads a run out.
If it wasn't for injuries Bissaka would possibly not had his chance.
I just dont enjoy the palace this season(so far)

This thread is almost a copy of a thread on Oatcake, the Stoke fanzine. They wanted excitement and hounded Pulis out, 2 years later due to Mr Excitement Hughes, they were relegated. Now hovering just above league 1.

If anyone thinks its exciting to be relegated, think again, it devastates a club who has stayed beyond 2 years in the Premier.

I put these threads down boredom, with no relegation to moan and worry about, at least Stoke fans have a sense of humour.

Are you more interested in being entertained/excited or not being relegated ?
This isn’t a moan, just been thinking it for a while.
Sometimes I think it would be a relief to be relegated and watch a team that tries to win matches and score goals rather than playing 8 defenders at home games to teams like Watford.
We need something between Pardew (with his 4-5 defeats) and Roy with 3 defensive midfielders in home games.
For a while now I’ve been going to Palace out of habit, rather than really looking forward to it.
As others have said if we get relegated without the ground being improved, what would have been the point? To create a load of 20 year old millionaires?
I’d like the main stand to be re developed as soon as possible, that way we will never end up being moved to Godstone/Purley or somewhere like that.
If I owned the club and was all about the money and staying up, I’d keep Roy until he goes to a nursing home, but other clubs have changed ‘safe’ managers , like Brighton and Millwall and the new boss has completely livened up , pretty much the same players and changed the way they play.
I understand after FDB why Parrish would be reluctant, but as a fan I’d like to celebrate a few goals and watch players that don’t look scared to pass the ball forwards. The biggest buzz I get at Selhurst at the moment is the 5-10 minutes when Meyer comes on.
Can’t knock the manager as his job is to keep us up, but is anyone looking at who is coming in next?
Just seems sometimes that we are looking at the short term money rather than a long term plan.
As I said at the start not a moan, just wondering if our most successful period in our history, is also one of the most boring?

Good post.

Agree, unless we redevelop the stadium then you wonder what was the point of it all.

Personally I don’t care what league we are in. I go to watch Palace, not the opponents.

Great we are in the Premiership but it is not half as exciting as the Championship, where you can be 12th in the table at Christmas and still get promoted.

That’s just my take.

Both excellent points that I also subscribe to.
