I don't know but suspect that it is a way to try and get some money for him if he plays well on loan rather than letting him go for free. It's a gamble, obviously.

I get the loan thing but let's say he did go out on loan and started banging in the goals somewhere, then what? Roy doesn't fancy him. He's on record of saying that he'd be interested in getting another striker in the next transfer window..

pretty sure the Wickham extension was a Stevie P decision, clearly made with little or no managerial input.
Similar decisions have been made over the years with Paddy Mac, Jonny Williams etc.

Clearly not a business decision. If Wickham is on c£55k a week as has been mooted the sooner he is off the wage bill the better.

If fit he could go on loan to the championship but how much of his wage will they pay? Surely not even half.

There are some FFP reasons why you’d want to extend a players contract, if you’re close to the profit/loss limit.

Extending a player’s contract will mean you can increase their book value ie it will make your balance sheet look better.

Of course, it will cost you wages in cash terms. So it’s not necessarily a great decision, but maybe a case of ‘needs must’.

This could explain the otherwise strange looking extension for Wickham (and to a lesser extent Benteke).

Vive le Roy!

But his contribution has been 20 apps in the last 4 seasons and that's cost us (if rumours are true) 12m in wages alone.

Who is going to pay any sort of money for him, based on that?

Yet someone at the club has decided to pay him a further 3m to stay an extra year and then he can just walk away and retire, makes no sense. I'm baffled.
