I was wondering who would take a pen if we got one and the thought of PVA didn't really occur to me. I was thinking Sclupp or Ayew would be the nominated ones but glad it was PVA

Always dodgy to keep a pen low though, Luka always does his quite high up, much harder for a keeper to dive upwards from the goal line if the ball is placed properly in the corner, lots of power too from Luka keeper has no time.

..he is a very solid attacking player and his defending is at odds because of this, he does though put his body on the line brilliantly blocking shots, I have seen an improvement so far this season, but the whole defending display against Spurs was still scarily evident sadly.

We should be playing him on the wing not as a left back, he's a shocking defender, rarely cutting out crosses.

Not if you wait to decide where to place it until the keeper has moved.

He's a wing back playing as a full back. He is certainly more attacking than defensive. However, the cover would be Schlupp or.... Reidewald.

i dont think we have any worries with PVA as our first choice full back.

is he perfect? no

is he part of one of the best defensive units in the league? yes

his pace gets him out of trouble sometimes, but going forward he is really good...he links up really well with whoever is playing in front of him.

Go to 1:16 to see what happens if you wait for the keeper to move.....

I'm loving Palace life at the moment and have no complaints ... Pva is the only Palace player I actually think will score when he bears down on goal. Wilf will blaze over. Jordan will fall over. Benteke will be playing with his phone. So when he stepped up on Saturday I thought of course it's PVA, he's Dutch so he'll score.

That said, I take it all back about Jordan. Particularly since Man U.

Which defender has made most tackles in the Premier League this season? PVA with 34. Only midfielder Ndidi with 36 has more.

Which full back has scored most goals in the last two seasons or so in the Premiership? PVA with 12.

interesting defensive stat on PVA...I'm always a little sceptical of stats because they are often going to reflect a team's setup. See a separate discussion on Wilf this term.

Even so, I still feel PVA's positioning is a weakness. Not just where he stands but often the way he angles his body isn't quite A1.

he does strike a ball cleanly i agree, although I often come away from games feeling like his passing has been below the level he's capable of...through a combination of absent mindedness and over confidence.

he sometimes passes into midfield only to find an opposing player. that's one of the most dangerous ways to cede control of the ball.

I understand these sentiments entirely whilst adding that perhaps one could advance the argument that defenders are often forced into making tackles because they have been caught out of position.

Speaking to Alan Hansen a few years ago he said to me words to the effect that positioning is the key to good defending and he knew a thing or two about the defensive arts!
