All Along the Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix

its a very special cover where the original artist adopts your version of the song

I quite like the Barmy Army's version of Love Will Tear You Apart by Joy Division as a tribute to cricketer Graham Swann

Robert Wyatt I'm a believer.

All of pin ups by bowie.

As an aside, bowie recorded a few iggy pop / bowie penned tunes around the time of letsdance so iggy (who had fallen on hard times) would get some royalties.

His version of Shipbuilding was pretty good too

Covers that are notably as good or better than the original.

Johnny Cash - Hurt - NIN version is simply average NIN filler. Cash turns it into a swansong.

Dubstar 'Not so Manic Now' and 'St Swithuns Day'.

Rage Against the Machine 'Street Fighting Man' and 'Maggies Farm' (also their version of Pistol Grip Pump).

Sister Ray - Joy Division (sounds just as f**ked)

Gram Parsons 'Wild Horses' is better than the Stones, and then controversially, Belly's version of Hot Burrito #1 is better than The Flying Burrito Brothers.

Emmy Lou Harris - Wrecking Ball and Deeper Well. Makes both the originals look pointless - and Neil Youngs Wrecking Ball is f**king immense.

Velvet Underground 'Louie, Louie' better than the Kingsmens original.

Nouvelle Vague - Everything pretty much they've recorded is on a par with the original.

Cowboy Junkies - Sweet Jane. I love the Velvet Underground, but f**k me this version, a cover of the later Velvets version, is astonishing.

1969 - The Sisters of Mercy - As good as the Stooges.

Bauhaus - Ziggy Stardust - The best David Bowie, might actually be Pete Murphy. Incidently, I love Nuevelle Vagues cover of Bela Lugosi's Dead as well....

Also Johnny Cash does a sweet version of Mercy Seat, that's probably better than the original version, but not as good as the revised Nick Cave version.

Iggy Pop released it first I think, but I'm not sure that makes it a cover when Bowie was involved in it from the kick off. He essentially covered his own song.

I thought iggy wrote it.
