Hemingway's Death in the Afternoon is a great read on the subject.

By all accounts, the bulls are treated really well, up until they fight anyway!

Its a great novel, but of its time and place. Back then, treating other people with dignity and respect was a novel idea, let alone animals.

A matador got killed fairly recently I think.

If the Spanish wanted to abolish it it's up to them, got nothing to do with us.

It's their heritage, culture and history, it's not our place to dictate to others how their society should behave.

If it's a choice between allowing a sport with hundreds of years of history and part of their fabric going or keeping a bunch of tree huggers happy, I know which side i'm on

Interesting concept.

There was an item on News at Ten last night about Female Genital Mutilation which seems to be part of the Somali culture. Should we be turning a blind eye to that as well and perhaps arranged marriages too on the basis that we shouldn't be dictating our lifestyles on other cultures.

More religious than cultural isn't it? It goes on in many other places too, including Russia.

And we do make ridiculous exceptions from decency or common sense for religions.

Isn't fox hunting legal again?

Cruelty, in all forms, demeans us, irrespective of our excuses. But there is a special abhorrence for those who inflict cruelty for sport, on 'lesser' species and then try to vindicate it as acceptable.

Halal and Kosher aren't in any way necessities of the Jewish and Muslim faith.

Not in general but there have always been loopholes I believe. Plenty of foxes still get hunted apparently.

You could have said that about apartheid.

I see nothing wrong with expressing a moral viewpoint. The Spanish would end the practice if enough people objected to it in Spain via the democratic process.

Yes I firmly believe that, but your example is more to do with Somali people who live here and that brings you to the debate about integration. It's not accepted if Somalis want to live in our society. What they do in their own country is, like I said, their own prerogative.

Do Spanish come to the UK and want to build a bullfighting ring ? No, exactly

That would have been sedition talk not that long ago! We were bloody good at it during the days of Empire and with the Christian Missionaries.

To the dungeon with you.

F**k them, they're wrong. Same with people cutting up girls v*****s. Who gives a f**k about culture, tradition or the like when its indefensible. The old last refuge of the scoundrel.

No it's more cultural than religious in regards to FGM as it is practised by Muslims and Christians alike despite no calls for it being part of either religion other than a brief allusion in the Haddiths
