From the article. Counter-terrorism chiefs have spent almost 20 years trying to bring Choudary, a father of five, to trial, blaming him, and the proscribed organisations which he helped to run, for radicalising young men and women. However I'm sure that they appreciated the months of help from Britain First!

It's great news but I hope that he's kept in solitary confinement, away from the easily impressionable.

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses.

There will be a gaggle of lawyers itching to make a legal aid killing on every minor restriction of human rights the poor thing may suffer whilst inside :-(

Jailed for 5 and half years each.

In court, Choudary refused to stand up in the dock as his sentencing hearing began.

Should've given him an extra year just for that.

Optimistic as ever

5 years is an absolute joke. Should of been 10 years max and with solitary with an extra year added for contempt of court. Words can't describe how much I despise this hypocritical piece of sh!t.

Not respecting the authority of the court, by silent protest, isn't contempt of court sadly (as you don't get parole on contempt).

Its a tricky area of law, when dealing with people who are just about on the right side of things like Freedom of Speech etc.

Quite right to. And the state should be absolute in establishing that his legal rights are met to the letter of the law, and that he receives exactly the same treatment as any other prisoner.

After all if he 'hangs himself' inside, its much better that it doesn't come back to haunt those responsible.

Here's hoping the Americans have extradition proceedings under way. That'll wipe the smirk off his face.

Been reading the Express have we? You can get only 4 years for aggravated rape; but in this case we get a year more for just supporting terrorism. Remember, this is a case where the prosecution failed to make a connection between his preaching and any actual act of terrorism. This conviction smacks more of example setting than a proper tariff to fit the offence.

Moreover, there is a certain whiff of hypocrisy about. On the one hand he was targeted as a person who challenged this country's values and way of life. Presumably, this would include what is a relatively modern criminal justice system consistent with an advanced liberal democracy? On the other, there are those baying for his blood demanding - and here's the irony - the sort of sentence that this man would hand out if he were the judge and his version of Sharia law were in force.

By all means despise the man and what he stands for; but we should not expect [and indeed we should demand] that he receives a fair trial and a sentence consistent with the proven harm he has actually done. In my view that is not beardy, tree-hugging, sandal-wearing, weak-kneed liberalism - although it would be painted as such by our friends over the pond - it is being British.

Sorry silvertop but from my perspective that is EXACTLY what it is.

He has received a fair trial but the sentence does not reflect the harm his preaching has done not only here but across the world... he's a dangerously bad influence to young minds.

As Stuk pointed out his refusal to stand in the dock to hear his sentence and his supporters shouting "Alan's Snack Bar" or whatever their rallying cry is shows his utter contempt of our society and effect on other impressionable followers.

I don't expect you or others like you to change your minds anytime soon... that is how people like Choudary are able to get away with it for so long, but I'll bet that public pressure will mean this ridiculously short sentence is reviewed and increased to 10 years to act as a proper deterrent to other muslim hate preachers peddling their venomous jihadi dialogue whilst enjoying the lifestyle that the UK affords them, with many actually on huge benefits supporting them and their families!
